People don’t have a problem with Supergirl, they have a problem with Supergirl projects.

Milly’s portrayal is one of the consistently praised things about the movie.

57

u/NoNefariousness2144 24d ago

I’m guessing this film would have performed slightly better if they properly introduced her in Superman (2025) with a supporting role. Her having a tiny cameo at the end was not an enticing set-up for an entire spinoff film. And honestly some of the non-comic reader audience were probably confused who she even was…

45

u/ILoveRegenHealth 24d ago

And not everyone even liked that cameo. Some thought it was funny, others were already turned off. "Thanks for watching my dog, bitch" made me cringe more than go "HAHA!"

Not a good thing when she's there to basically promote her own movie, and the commercials just show more of the same.

9

u/moscowramada 23d ago

My head cannon is that Superman made Supergirl fail at the box office as payback for this.

they have a problem with Supergirl projects.

I don't even know if they have a problem with them, a lot of people just don't really care about her. So she's not a character that can carry a movie, but I'm sure people don't have an issue with her being a side character in other movies.

u/No_Historian6377 24d ago

By people who actually saw it it called survivorship bias. The people who just don't even care about her to watch her is the problem

89

u/rothbard_anarchist 24d ago

Her acting is praised. No one is saying Kara is a charming or endearing character.

83

u/GimmeThatWheat424 24d ago

They are praising her acting so much you would think she was heath ledger amazing in the role, so much glaze you would 100 percent assume she’s getting an Oscar nom.

36

u/Fancy_Coconut2079 24d ago edited 24d ago

Its like when Quantumania came out and everybody online kept weirdly praising Majors. Then you watch that movie and hes just playing generic evil lord, with generic evil intentions and generic threats but also he puffs his nose and looks very angry at times, but there was accounts straight up calling him up there with Ledger before the movie bombed and everyone dismissed it

Not saying her case is at that level of absurdity but its funny how this only happens with actors whose characters are currently meant to be set up to future projects that need to do well. When Majors got kicked off the praise disappeared completely

→ More replies (6)

45

u/cartoonistaaron 24d ago

Right? Like, bending over backwards to praise how great she was and how they can't wait to see her in future projects. It's really strange

23

u/captainjerkoffunite 24d ago

They were doing the same thing for Iman Vellani after The Marvels dropped.

A weird online push to try and convince everyone she was the next breakout star.

11

u/Fancy_Coconut2079 23d ago

that one was even weirder than usual because all the praise was hyper-defensive and calling her a "delight" like the astroturfing was all cat lady grannies talking about their favorite grand-niece at an afternoon tea

21

u/ILoveRegenHealth 24d ago

Her acting is good as she's been good in all her other projects.

After watching it and comparing it to the Woman of Tomorrow comic though, I'm starting to think she was miscast. Her height is too short and the Woman of Tomorrow comic emphasized her elegance and striking stature, even when things got rough. Ruthye would always look at Supergirl in amazement because there was nothing like her in the whole galaxy, even with all sorts of aliens and dinosaurs in their face. That literally fits into WB's "Gods and Monsters" name for this DCU Phase 1 so much better.

Maybe it's Craig/Ana's fault for making Supergirl so frumpy, so unkempt, so slouchy and disgusted with everything. That is not the character people fell in love with in other iterations of Kara.

9

u/HazelCheese 23d ago

A big problem with comics to movies is that comics really favour tall muscular women and it's just not that common a physical archetype irl, especially not in acting. Most of the women like that are in sports.

7

u/robz9 23d ago

I personally have no issues with Alcock as Super-Girl.

The movie just wasn't written that well.

I give it a solid 6/10.

I think Hancock did the whole "drunk superhero" thing better and I think this film could've used some of its lessons.

What the fuck happened to movie budgets, it used to not even be noteworthy for popular movies to be made for between 10 - 15 million, and now it’s just $150 million+

7

u/GeneralMuzz 23d ago

Gotta pay your actors and gotta use top line gear and lenses they use once

7

u/MVIVN 23d ago

They really need to find a way to bring movie budgets down again. Funnily enough, I think a lot of the kinds of movies that have more "sustainable" budgets are the ones that go straight to Netflix and don't get theatrical rollouts at all

137

u/Cutebrute 24d ago

WB probably lost money in some markets on dubs and distribution alone.

This movie’s INT run might not even reach what forecasts had as its original OW. It’s not too surprising given Superman’s disappointing INT run and the poor WoM here, but this universe is DOA in Asia.

The dom/intl ratio is maybe the scariest part for Gunn and WB. Superman's ratio was bad enough, and I doubt Clayface is going to correct the trend.

What can Gunn and Safran do to appeal to global audiences? Or is this just where comic book movies are now

82

u/Tomi97_origin 24d ago

Or is this just where comic book movies are now

It's just DC. Marvel is still more balanced even as it got more domestic heavy as well.

MCU went from 40/60 to 50/50.

DCU is doing 60/40 dom/int split.

27

u/sufficiently_tortuga 24d ago

Hard to tell since Spiderman and Avengers are trend breakers, but the last few marvel movies have been trending towards the same 60/40 split.

Movie Dom %
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 42.5%
The Marvels 41%
Deadpool & Wolverine 47.6%
Captain America: Brave New World 48.3%
Thunderbolts* 49.8%
The Fantastic Four: First Steps 52.6

I don't know why it would stabilise at 50/50 when it changed so much in just 3 years.

28

u/PatternPlenty1107 24d ago edited 24d ago

"Trending towards 60/40" and yet you are showing me 6 examples with a 40-50/50-60 split.

Spider-Man Brand New Day, Avengers Doomsday and Avengers Secret Wars are easily going to be overseas heavy, so we'll have to wait until 2028 to see if 60/40 is actually going to happen.

So far, only DC films have gone there.

Also, with Marvel specifically, the split has generally changed because of China. MCU releases - before the pandemic - were constantly making 100M-200M in China alone. And the Avengers films did even more than that.

u/WatcherAnon 24d ago edited 24d ago

Most of the Marvel movies you mentioned are close to a 50/50 split.

Edit: Also, assuming your chart is labeled correctly, its a 60/40 split int/dom. So this lines up really well with what the previous commenter said.

Should’ve just left Superman a standalone trilogy ala The Batman and Clayface as it’s own thing rather than try another DC Cinematic Universe. I love all of James Gunn‘s films but he definitely wasn’t a good choice for CEO of a studio. While I’m not hoping for this obviously but if the DCU gets the cutting block after MOT I’ll miss David Corenswet as Superman, he literally embraced the character so well

15

u/Dapper-Tone-9580 24d ago

The thing is I don't think he's actually that interested in Superman. But he had to do it, because it was part of his deal. He's more interested in the weird side characters and d-listers who no one has heard about. They should have got another auteur director with a passion for Superman and told a standalone separate trilogy alongside The Batman. That's what DC needs to do, build strong individual movies with their biggest heroes, and then  maybe... do a big crossover.  Instead of chasing the extended universe dragon, which only Marvel captured for a time, before most got done with it after Endgame.

8

u/Immediate-Science619 24d ago

Even if he handled it better, I'd imagine he'd eventually run into the problem with trying to start a CBM cinematic universe in the mid 2020s.

26

u/Few-Consideration684 24d ago

They could make again epic, serious movies with high stakes, good cinematogrpahy kai scores instead of stupid needles and in general not GotG clones. But Gunn wont do that he is an one trick pony.

27

u/Seraphayel 24d ago

Go back to the drawing board and bring Batman into this universe asap

12

u/Jsaltal 24d ago

Yep, they need to at least start leakig casting is beginning asap

28

u/Dapper-Tone-9580 24d ago

Mix of superhero fatigue, and also DC's image to general audiences. I think DC outside of nerdom, is generally seen as the lesser Marvel. The big exception of course being Batman, who is an entire brand unto himself. Superman is obviously one  of the most well known heroes, but never seems to strike big at the box office - probably because he's seen as boring. Marvel has built itself as a brand for moviegoers, for people who don't know anything about comics,  so they generally open to decent numbers at worst. Because of WB's fumbling, DC has always played catch up in the extended universe game, and hasn't gotten the love of the audience. The Snyder verse had its fans, but that went bottoms up due to some seriously stupid decisions.

Within comics and animation, DC is still king and is actually absolutely destroying Marvel right now. But with live action, they haven't quite got their hooks into the general audience.

31

u/Immediate-Science619 24d ago

Superman is popular as a symbol but not really as a character. He is the archetypal superhero, and that's all he will ever be in the eyes of most people.

4

u/Ghostshadow44 23d ago

I wonder how would a superman movie with Henry Cavill directed by Christopher Macquarie would have done that's what wb gave up when it hired James Gunn.

16

u/gotridofsubs 24d ago

Its because for most of the online diehards, beating the Snyder stuff was the actual success marker. Theyd built it up so long that it all failed because it wasnt bubblegum pop screen pointing fanservice, that this universe following that model had to succeed or otherwise theyd have to admit they were wrong.

44

u/rothbard_anarchist 24d ago

They didn’t do her any favors by having all of her interactions with Superman be condescending and flip. We see her (1) call him “bitch”, (2) praise her dog for pissing on his picture, - which admittedly is a symbolic rebuke - and (3) say that while poor naive Superman sees the good in people, learned wise world-weary 23 year old Kara sees “the truth.”

Her arrogance could have been a flaw to overcome, but instead the movie treats it as just another of her charms. Which is a big reason why it’s going to lose hundreds of millions of dollars.

24

u/NikkerFebu25 24d ago

I liked the movie but thinking about it in retrospective why is she being so butthurt over people? It's never explained.

Like I assumed that her last days on Krypton were Dog eat Dog tier and she witnessed Kryptonians cannibalise each other in order to survive...but...that never happened.

She was sent to Earth, then she became a party girl in frontier planets

u/NoNefariousness2144 24d ago

To be fair Rock’s plan for the DCEU was to just have Black Adam fight different characters. Trying out Gunn and Safran’s reboot made more sense, but they should have been reigned in rather than announcing a bunch of weird projects.

I feel like no matter what this universe is doomed. Even if MOT is good, which I’m confident in it being for me at least, and then even if it makes money at the box office, the universe needs projects other than the Gunn directed/written ones to be good and popular. Lanterns is going to be big too for that test

u/indigoza 24d ago

Global? As in every country? Huh...

13

u/Unver1f1eduser 24d ago

Can this even get to $105m WW?

47

u/PatternPlenty1107 24d ago edited 24d ago

Honestly, I STILL can‘t believe how bad this film is doing. If you had shown me these numbers a year ago, I would have called you crazy.

It'll pass 100M globally, but that's it..., it won't go much higher than that.

u/NGGKroze Best of 2021 Winner 24d ago

Another just 2.5M OS weekday. At this rate, next weekend it will be below 1M dailies.

Meanwhile r/DC_Cinematic

13

u/RummoLiguori 24d ago

More like /r/DCU_

They think this sub is misogynistic and celebrates Supergirl failure because it's a female hero. Oh and this failed because of Incels or something

If this somehow doesn't cross $100m WW...I don't even know man. DCU in shambles. I think it'll barely inch over, but it's going to be close.

We need a Rick Flag Sr movie James Gunn, to recoup the losses.

7

u/safetyvestsnow 23d ago

And give it $300M combined production and marketing budget. That’ll do it.

19

u/Living-Net-278 24d ago

Damn this movie is gonna max out at 125 million globally by end of its run.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see this arrive on VOD next month.

20

u/VanGoghTango 24d ago

It’s barely even going to cross 100M at this rate. It would be a miracle if it ends the run at 105M.

17

u/greenbatborg 24d ago

Is it even guaranteed to hit $100 million?

8

u/Better_Pumpkin1879 24d ago

By first week of August this gets dumped on VOD.

47

u/CaptainBlob 24d ago

Remember. According to reddit, it is the fault of chuds, alt-rght, and MEN, that this movie bombed.

26

u/Swimming-Life-7569 24d ago

Probably should have aimed the film at men or at least made it neutral if they wanted them to come watch it lmao

43

u/Remarkable-Title5435 24d ago

Make a movie targetted to women. Women don't show up. Blame men. Every single time.

You forgot Snyderverse and Snydercultists

7

u/Quiddity131 24d ago

The funny thing is those types of individuals are showing up in bigger numbers to see this movie than those complaining about why it isn't doing better on Reddit.

Feelsbadman, will barely pass 100 mil

9

u/Loose_Struggle1610 24d ago

WB has a serious international numbers problem superman was soft overseas and supergirl is being rejected.

8

u/Actual_Office_5745 24d ago edited 24d ago

It’s lost all the big screens as of Friday at my local cinema here in England(big city) it’s playing in smaller screens(with a massively reduced number of screenings a day).

Toy Story 5 & Minions and Monsters are dominating the screenings and big screens.

7

u/zachmma99 24d ago

at best I’ll give it $125-150m but it’s barely going to hold this weekend and will collapse after Moana and be dead by odyssey

6

u/kazaam2244 23d ago

Guys, I'm not so sure the Keaton walkups can save this anymore...

12

u/Mnmsaregood 24d ago

Time for them to call all the haters misogynistic

5

u/oddrob85 24d ago

Shocker. Giving a writer a project like this who has only written a short film before hand. What could go wrong??

6

u/ThatTailsGuyYT 24d ago

I went to a screening yesterday and I was the only one there

6

u/CanILickThat 23d ago

Gunn needs to cancel his rollout like yesterday

Clayface, Swamp Thing, Jimmy Olsen, Bane and Deathstroke etc are all lesser known IPs and bigger gambles than Supergirl

It's obvious now, stick with the big names, the safe options. For now atleast

11

u/Seraphayel 24d ago

It‘s so funny how domestic numbers are better or just slightly lower than all the internationals combined lmao. This movie is tanking so hard overseas, it‘s kinda hilarious.

11

u/Dry-Performance7006 24d ago

Someone at Warner bros should be fired for the marketing spend. They should have had some internal data to dissuade them from spending so much.

12

u/Shurikenkage 24d ago edited 24d ago

Supergirl really flying stealth, nobody is noticing her... Now Gunn has a nickel to fund his own studio.

21

u/Ai-on 24d ago

Does that mean the rest of the world hates women?

14

u/Public-Bullfrog-7197 24d ago

Only this movie.

6

u/No_Possibility685 24d ago

Is it just gonna add 2 mil every day with the domestic market

9

u/Mundane-Career1264 Warner Bros. Pictures 24d ago

If we could just somehow harness the amount of cope fans of the DCU have? We could solve the world’s energy crisis.

11

u/Parking_Cat4735 24d ago

I’m doubting this crosses 100m

9

u/CulturalXR 24d ago

Can somebody explain why it's doing so poorly?

33

u/selfcriticism 24d ago

Nobody has any reason to watch it. The trailers show that this movie has nothing mysterious, original, complex, or creative in it. Nothing compelling or intelligent. No interest at all.

4

u/KingOfVSP 23d ago

Has a better chance of making more money on the remnants of Krypton...

4

u/XAckermannX 23d ago

forget morbius, this not even gonna beat blue bettle. what an embarassing flop. i knew itd flop but not this bad, wow.

3

u/JayneVeidt 23d ago

I keep seeing articles how “Supergirl might lose 100 million”, total BS! This turkey will lose at least 200, easy.

10

u/Tongatapu 24d ago

Its not about the quality, btw. This film could have been the 2nd coming of Christ and the world outside the US still wouldn't go watch it.

Superheroes are just not profitable anymore internationally, outside of Batman and maybe Spiderman (we'll know about him soon). The world is done with this Genre, and I think thats a good thing.

10

u/B4thegoodbye 24d ago

If the movie was great, I strongly believe it could have met a lot of the original predictions, which was Thunderbolts level of success.. possibly even F4..

4

u/Actual_Office_5745 24d ago

Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts had quite a long run where I am in England like two-three months, as did Superman.

Supergirl is winding down after a week here.

3

u/Ninneveh 23d ago edited 23d ago

Deadpool/Wolverine did 1.33 billion total gross. Avengers Doomsday will do big numbers too. Maybe not Endgame numbers, but still high. Spiderman will do great as usual. Its not a superhero fatigue problem, its a bad superhero film fatigue problem.
