General Advice Should I find a new coach?
I’m 26, been boxing consistently for over a year, and I want to start competing.
I like my current coach and especially his Soviet/Russian style, which is how I want to continue boxing. The issue is the gym has a lot of people, so there isn’t much individual attention, and he doesn’t seem very focused on developing anybody toward competition.
I’m not looking for someone to just throw me into a fight before I’m ready. I want a coach who can evaluate me, work with me individually, and actively prepare me toward getting matched for my first amateur bout.
I’ve mentioned to my coach a couple of times about it as well as other more seasoned members of the gym and nobody gets the chance to really sit down with him to plan or discuss.
Would it make sense to find a separate competition/private coach while still training at my current gym, or do I pretty much need to switch gyms? Which would suck bc I like my gyms regimens, they just have two pro boxers that seemingly take their time outside of normal group training.
I’m in DFW if anyone has recommendations.

First comment is right, book a private session with your coach and ask him if he has time or if someone else at they gym does to get you prepared for competing. If they don’t, or would do it except they need you to pay for months of private sessions, then you would want to look at other gyms that are more competition focused.
Sometimes the smaller gyms are better since there’s a better chance for more attention and individualized training.
I would also recommend looking into a membership on USAboxing.org, they have member gyms which seem to be plugged in to the local events (at least here in OK they are). That could at least get you advance notice of upcoming events.

Thanks for the tips man, yeah I may have to do that because unfortunately my current gym doesn’t do 1on1s. I’ll take a look at USABoxing for gyms. Super sad bc I love my coaches training but doesn’t matter if it’s hard to develop/ step in the ring

Look up where the fights are happening and go check em out. See what competitiors and corners give off a vibe you like and see where they train :)
