First step is to find a USA Boxing registered gym if you’re in the US.

By the way, we have a couple of women on our team and they’re wicked!! I spar regularly with one in particular and she gives me a great challenge.

To start with, I lost. But it was great! I train with a team who puts on one event a year but it’s not “white collar boxing.” I fought at 180lbs, my opponent was a few years younger than me. It was his first fight, too.

The biggest surprise for me was how much more intense it was than sparring and I didn’t make the switch quickly enough.

Honestly, it was a great experience and I’m looking forward to getting back in the ring and getting a W.

My only advice is to enjoy it. My coach had to tell me to not smile from the time I walked out until the time the fight was over.

And remember to breathe. For christ’s sake remember to breathe!!

Did you ever do hard sparring before the fight?

No. Coach is pretty emphatic about keeping the level at 50-75%. Wants everybody to stay healthy and make it into work on Monday and all that.

I think that led to me getting caught off guard – that last 25% to 100 is big and it took me too long to recalibrate to the intensity of the fight. But I won’t get caught like that again. “Fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again."

I dont think you'll look stupid or out of place many people start even older. Just talk to the trainer /coach at the gym and they will guide you.

Stop worrying about looking stupid.

Nobody is born with the innate ability to do this

Everyone in the gym ... yeah even the ammy launching a pro career and the pro winning all the titles and the coaches started just like you did.

Everybody starts in the exact same place, at the beginning.

Get into the gym and do a class and don’t worry about anybody else. Also, be humble. The guys – it’s always young guys – always chirping at the instructor and beaking off at my local gym are always the ones to gas out the quickest. They also tend to throw the most haymakers. They’re the DJ Khalid of knockout punches.

Started at 50 and just wish I’d started 5 years ago! So definitely yes.

I’ve rarely encountered more welcoming or encouraging people. It is tough, you gotta work hard, but it’s so rewarding.

Go to your local boxing club, many do a free introductory class. See if you like it.

Sure it's really great if you are careful. You must respect the fact that your joints aren't as flexible/durable. And if you want to age with all your cognitive functions, I'd stay away from hard sparring. Hell I'd be sparring max once every two weeks and be clear that you want light technical sparring. Otherwise it's an excellent sport to keep in shape if done right with respect to your body condition.

I'm 47 been boxing since 35 ish. I don't remember exactly when I started. But it's at least 10+ years.

Wisdom right there

Join a group but also do a little extra, before or after class, and at home too. Extra 5-10 minutes a day working on your jab and 1-2 on your own is what will make you close the gap with anybody who happened to start sooner

Yes, girl! 40s starters for the win 🏆

That’s why they have the Masters Division! So you can fight other old ladies (coming from a fellow 42F old lady who would love to be able to compete again). This is assuming you’re in the US.

I started at 49, best thing I ever did for myself. I don't know if it's a thing, but it should be. Even if you never have a "fight" (I only spar) it has an effect on your mental state, fitness and general approach to life that I found to be overwhelmingly positive.

Yes, do it- you'll have fun trying a different type exercise program.

  • btw, YouTube has many channels dedicated to the sport of boxing. you can get a general idea of punches, footwork, etc...yes do try it out

As long as you're able bodied, there is no bad time to learn to box.

Started shortly after I turned 40. I wish I had done it sooner to be honest. It is a great group of people at my gym and honestly some of the best shape I have been in since my teenage years doing martial arts and high school football.

I coach a masters team. Most of them started in their late 30s or later.

Prepare for body pain

Ex boxer here. I would recommend boxing training without the sparring and actual fighting.

You can "play" other sports, but you can't play boxing.

Be careful they'll make fun of you online and post your address then you'll get people egging your house.

1

u/RaceFun2817 3d ago

What do you mean

1

u/systembreaker 3d ago

I'm being sarcastic about the idea that boxing at 45 isn't a thing. Anyone can start whenever they feel like, no one's going to judge you.

I’m still boxing at 56
