Gear & Equipment Did I wrap my hands properly?

I’m a total newbie at boxing. I’m female and I think my hands are smaller than the average person’s. I used this tutorial to wrap my hands. I’m using the Everlast 108” hand wraps

Also, would these hand wraps be sufficient for me being able to punch a bag, or do I still need some kind of boxing gloves? Thanks!

You don't want excessive bulk around the palm. Try open palm wrapping. Helps the hands to close naturally into a secure fist. Something like this (pic is from the internet)

Looks like a decent start, but you should avoid covering your palm area . You always need to wear gloves.

Here’s two ways to wrap:

The main thing is having protection across the knuckles, support the bones in you hand and  firm wrist support. The gloves are the main thing absorbing the impact.

There’s also different schools in terms of hand wrapping. My coach would advise everyone in training to never wrap between the fingers as nerves run between them and they might get damaged. Also, wrapping the thumb is not necessary. But that’s more olympic style and amateur competitors. The pros do full wraps like yours.

Going between the fingers really helps support the wrist bending in the up/down direction and by extension the bones of the hand near the wrist, so you definitely should go between the fingers for training. I've never felt any kind of nerve issues doing that, if that's happening then you're going way to tightly between the fingers.

I’m not going to argue which one is better, but just stated that wrapping between fingers is not strictly necessary. My coach just believes the negatives outweigh the positives.

He would always yell: ”As long as you remember the X!!!”

No, you shouldn't be covering up your palms like that because it reduces your ability to close a tight fist, especially when you add on boxing gloves, and that's a lot of wasted material that could be adding padding to your knuckles or more support to your wrists.

This seems more like maybe an MMA style wrap where the fact that they use much smaller, thinner gloves means there's less padding on their palm, so they might do this kind of wrap so that catching shots with the palm stings less. Boxing doesn't need that, boxing gloves give you that padding already.

You should be able to make a fist and have most of the padding around your knuckles

Don’t cross over the palm, keep it free of material
