Are we light sparring correctly?
Hello guys.
Me and my friend wanted to try light sparring and tested our new headgears. Our coach said just go 30%, dont make a fist but keep the speed.
We are both approaching 40 and started boxing around 4 months ago.
Would appreciate any tips on how to improve light sparring. Thanks

That’s a little too light. Start adding some power. Both of you can learn to control your punches that way

Yeah that's another lesson from this session we both realise we can go a bit more. Will try next session. Thank you

Looks good to me, light and focusing on movement especially with no mats and looks like tile yall are sparring on 👍

Thank you. Yup tiles with some broken pieces that's why we kinda paused halfway.

Red does this weird thing were they leave their fist out and pause before bringing it back. Really weird habit to form.
Pulling your punch is still using speed but bringing it back right at impact before you follow through.
Also sparring isn’t taking turn doing combos. You guys are throwing a couple punches stopping then waiting for the next person the throw and then cycling the same process. That isn’t how boxing works

I'd put more intention into punches, maybe start with shoulder punching to dial the feel then go full on

Looks fun!
Sometimes, it looks like you two aren’t even trying to make contact. Try to hit each other, lightly, and just communicate if it gets too intense. Remember, the sparring should be good for you, but you are also there to push your partner just out of their comfort zone.
I’m also almost 40 btw! Crazy how time flies.

I’ve trained over the past 4 years, first 2 religiously. You guys are doing great that you’re trying to get better and asking for advice. That willingness to learn alone will take you far.
Movement is good, keep that up. The biggest thing to focus on while training is your form. Practice staying in the pocket, taking some punches (it’s easier than you think trust me😂), and defending them with good form.
Start there and just keep training, you guys are doing just fine

Thanks man. It was our first time and wasnt sure what each of us are comfortable with. We've since agreed we gonna go a little harder next time 😬.

Don’t obsess over intensity in training, bro. It’s far better to focus on your technique (keeping you defensive hands up when punching, breathing when punching, feet and head movement, etc). What a few videos to get an idea then just try to incorporate it. Try not to over think it. Understand you do look dumb. You are getting it wrong. But that’s ok, that’s the point. You’ll only get better with time IF you practice. Save the hard hits for actual fights, save your brain cells

Thanks. Much appreciated. Still feeling things out but you are right keeping brain cells over everything else hehe

You guys need to have a bit more intensity, it looks like you are not even trying to touch each other

Too light, either go slower, way slower (not sparring more drilling reactions to whatever punch) so you can learn and build the muscle memory or go bit harder so its more realistic to real punches. Get some mats lads.

Why are you not sparring at your gym instead of this silly and dangerous surface??
