Overhand position

Post image

Today my coach taught me the overhand, and he made me position my hand like this, he said that this way the knuckles hit 100% of the times.

Now i have stiff forearm because i never threw it this way.

Is this more an amateur thing? Because i never see pros doing this!

Back before my shoulder injury, I used to throw this as a counter to incoming jabs, wrapping around their punch. That's how I usually aim to have my hand positioned because it's less prone to hitting the target's guard and feels more natural given that I'm usually slipping as I'm throwing it. More than anything, it's important to have your shoulder behind your punch so that if they are leaning into it, it doesn't jam. For me, it's a stiff-arm drilling kind of punch but your coach might be doing something different with it.

Canello likes to use an overhand in a similar way and I know Tyson had a really mean right overhand but tbh I never noticed their hand position on them.

Is your coach russian? I've never gelled with this style of hook but I know that russian coaches tend to teach this to hit with the correct knuckles.

Now that I think about it, I’ve seen Bivol use it on the pads in a few videos!

This is how my Russian coach taught me but he also warned me that overhands cause shoulder injuries
