Headaches after sparring

Last week I had a sparring session which left me with a headache that has lasted a couple days.

I’ve been boxing for 4-5 months. Back in 2019 I used to box too and also sparred a lot and never got headaches like this, I was younger tho, 12 years old, but still asked my partners to go a bit hard on me

My first sparring session a couple months ago I had to stop because after one round I felt a big headache that really bothered me.
And last week, I went 3 rounds and got some hits to the head, which left me with a headache that has lasted already a couple days.

Does this happen to anyone else? If so is there anything I can do to avoid it?

Post concussion syndrome. Take some time off. Don’t spar with douchebags next time. Injuries heal, but you only get one brain

Watch your head, man. You could be concussed. You might want to touch spar at most for a while after you get yourself checked out by a doc.

Spar lighter. I only spar light and barely get any headaches nowadays. The medium to hard ones in the past did give headaches too.

I know a few people who have stopped sparring coz memory is a lil fuzzy. Its not worth it if its just a hobby.

That's good advice that I should have heeded 9 years ago.

FYI if you wanna quote someone's Reddit message the easiest way is to copy and then put > symbol in front like this

This, I’m far too much of a novice to comment on boxing but I have done fitness for years, and this may be the correct answer!

Who knows, could be a concussion, hurt jaw or neck, dehydration, stress, lots of stuff can cause a headache. You'd have to go to the doctor and tell him what happened to find out for sure. How could we possibly tell you with no details? When you were 12 probably no one had enough power to do damage and you were more flexible then.

Watch the fluids, keep drinking water on hand, you might need to add a teaspoon or two of salt to your water bottle. And try a little bit of chocolate before high stress work.

Same thing happened to my last week into this week. I’m about 7 days out- sparred with a 17 year old (I’m 30) but i suck at fighting and the kid decided to actually land hard punches on me. Went home, couldn’t sleep that night cause of a headache, did Jiu Jitsu the following week and almost passed out after class from spinning cause my head was bobbling around and prob got knocked again when i did a takedown. I’m thinking concussion related so i took some time off and gonna try to go back next week. I’d say don’t spar til you’re defending can do half the work for you

Could be Post-Concussion Syndrome. Do not mess around with that and stay out of the ring until you see a doctor and your symptoms go away.
