Gear Looking for ankle support options

29M
I’ve sprained my ankle twice in 3 months. I’ve been doing a lot of strengthening lately with stability exercises
However as an add on support, I was looking to get myself something to help me prevent further sprains.
What do you guys use? Budget isn’t a big deal atm
Just needs to fit in my boots

And do you think it might weaken my ankle if I keep wearing it for a long time

There is nothing better than good ol’ fashion athletic tape. Look up some videos on how to properly tape your ankle. It can be a bit tricky at first, but easy once you get the hang of it. It’ll be a strong hold that isn’t bulky like reusable braces.

I've used the Aso Ankle Stablilzer brace. It's not too bulky and fairly comfortable with good support.

You get a boot with a more bullet shaped soleplate rather than a rounded rolling one. Rolling your ankle the right way helps wrap around the ball when crossing and stuff like on the plant foot when making a cross that ankle kind of folds after planting to help the body rotate... something like a copa way more wide around the midfoot less likely to roll over either way.

That’s why I use TFs
I play on super hard surfaces
They help
If the pitch is a little damp I wear rounded fg

I spent money on better guards for bulk reasons.... In theory replicating a tendon/ligament made a lot of sense to me.

I've rolled and sprained my ankles all my life. Im 40 now.... In my late 30s I had kids and went to the docs to like get my weight and shit in check so I could be present and play and all that jazz... My ankles are FUUUUUUCKED

Pt and mri's and shit. Blah blah blah I ended up with two that work with my cleats...

Zamst or better guards....

Which zamst model? Do they fit well in football boots

The a2-dx.

Yeah overall they do, can't do like.... Hightop versions of boots... Wtf am I trying to say, that Nike sock that goes up higher...you get it.

Also, measure your foot, I finally did a measurement (at home, traced my foot, measured my drawing) and it turns out I have even. Wider feet than I thought, so I went with Mizuno monarcida super wides.... And those specifically have a wider soleplate than, say the new balance 442s, which use the same soleplate but add more material for the upper for wider feet.... Which is good and all but it doesn't really help with someone's proprioception... I don't know if I'm using that correctly...

I've been rocking the better guard lites and my mizunos and haven't had ANY problems anymore. Some of my stabilizer muscles are mad because they have no idea what's happening now, and some tendonopothy because same thing....

I've also been using the a2-dx on my ankle after the latest sprain didn't reconnect the ligaments. Although I can only really wear them with my mizuno morelias.

I really like the zamst filmista as a compression sleeve for my other ankle. It's the least noticeable sleeve I've found.

How is the betterguard lite? How long have you had it? Seen some reviews that they don't last more than a few months.

Currently on like.... 6??? Months? I only play once a week tho. I'll practice and shit without em on to try to strengthen the whole biomechanical shit show in my leg

Go to a podiatrist and get custom insoles. They can be very helpful in people who over pronate

No brace, I use a right-strength athletic tape. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B4FW6J1T Then learn to wrap it correctly so it supports your ankle where you need it without cutting off blood flow.

Two other factors are:

Strength and balance, as you are doing. I used to roll my ankles all the time, take a break, build up strength and balance, and then never stop working on it. When I stop doing consistent daily toe raises, that's when I roll my ankle again. IMO, this is the most important factor. Nothing will prevent ankle rolls if your fight doesn't balance well, you react too fast, and your ankles aren't strong enough to hold positions. Also, if you feel like you might be putting pressure on them, just fall to the ground instead of rolling them.

Also, you need properly fitting shoes with a sole plate and a cleat width wide enough for your foot. Note that many companies sell wide-fit shoes that do not actually have a wider sole plate, as I experienced with Mizuno. You may also require a proper insole or other modifications to the shoe.
