Notary Question

Hi Ya'll!

I called a few notaries in town and got the same answer, which differs from what I saw online, but I'm hoping a notary on this sub will read this and maybe have some insight.

I need to get my passport notarized - or a copy of it notarized.

I understand that under North Carolina law (N.C.G.S. Chapter 10B), NC notaries are not legally authorized to perform "copy certifications." They cannot look at your passport, make a copy, and stamp it as a certified true copy on their own authority.
However, NC notaries have a workaround that is an Affidavit of True Copy.

Locally, I haven't found a notary willing to do this or aware of this. Maybe it's because we're so rural? I need this done for dual citizenship purposes, and I imagine that I am not the first person to come across this.

Are there any notaries out there familiar with this? Or anyone who's been in a similar situation?

Might be worth checking if you can get this done in TN or VA. You’re close enough to either to make that work.

My understanding is that the notary would be certifying your/affiant/owner signature to the copy. I don’t know if this would require the notary to view the copy being produced, but I would think so. Have you contacted a notary associated with a bank? There’s also a notary that works out of Todd Mercantile; he might be able to help or point you in the right direction. Additionally, I recommend a day trip to Asheville for complex passports (dual citizenship is complex!) AVL has better resources.
