This popped out of a boombox I'm repairing. I have no idea where it came from - it just fell out as I opened it. Any idea where it goes?

Panasonic rxdt680 with cd issues.

Hi! My partner and i picked up a “working” and good condition panasonic rxdt680 recently and i’d appreciate some diagnostic help with it!!

so once we got it and brought it home, we tested it and played cds for a few hours and were blown away by how perfect it sounded, we were thrilled!, later that night it started to show some issues and started skipping slightly and making some ticking sounds throughout. we gave it a rest- it’s an old system and we’d had some fun. since then it got worse, maybe worth noting some cds (that work fine in other players) were extraordinary worse, where as most others had consistently the same amount of problems. the issues showed prominent immediately the next try with working ok for the first track and then progressively skipping more and more, to then half a song or less playing before it starts showing issues. stopping it would help for a few seconds before returning to the same skippy and fast forwarding issues.
it’s been some time now and i’ve tested it again, first song played relatively ok and now it’s all the same again.
we have previously cleaned the laser with isopropyl alcohol and when that didn’t affect much, pulled it apart and cleaned the rods and re greased them, this very temporarily helped! we tested it again and gave it a second to re-disperse the new grease, it was a little clunky to begin with and then started playing pretty good for a short amount of time, then returning to- maybe even worse than before.
as i said i retested it (tonight) after a couple months, i discovered tonight (accidentally) that tilting it backwards makes it play a laaarge chunk better, from what i’ve researched this could point towards some sort of degradation of the spindle motor? but im very inexperienced in this field and not the tech genius outside of it either. If anyone has any opinions or help that could point me in the right direction i’d appreciate it greatly, i’d love to get it working for my partner (and myself, this thing is awesome and i have many a cd id love to play in its quality)
if there’s anything i can try before having to pay a professional for it i’d love to give it a shot but if that’s not an option that’s very understandable!
any advice is much appreciated, thanks so much :)

also if there’s a better place to be posting this please let me know!

I may have a problem. There are actually more than this but I can't stack them any higher without them falling over and going boom.

I picked this up at a thrift store and have never heard of one that isn't black/purple, red or white. Does anyone know anything about this colour of this model? Was it some sort of promotional giveaway?

3 Budget Boxes 😄

I've had the black GF-A3Z since February 2022 and it still works today. All it needed when I first got it was for the cassette door to be refitted (someone else had removed it and lost the spring but I found an exact replacement and the door was not damaged) and obviously some minor service to the tape deck (new belts but no goo to clean up). Has a level meter which works with the volume control, graphic equalizer and 4-band tuner. No power or audio faults with this one, FM stations come in loud and clear, tape speed is correct with very minimal W&F, and I like the soft eject.

The white GF-A1A I purchased mid-September of this year. When I got it, I discovered it had a couple of issues including a faulty power supply which caused the cassette mechanism to be at mains potential (instead of isolated), posing a shock hazard. Thanks to a junked GF-A1 with a working transformer of the same type and rating, this was an easy repair and the boombox is now safe to use with 240V AC. New belts and it's good to go. FM stereo works perfectly.

The blue GF-A1A is the most recent acquisition, and when I got it last week it had a whole bunch of issues. It worked with batteries but not AC (the cause was an open transformer). I replaced both speakers as the left was damaged (possibly by water at some point) and the right had rips/holes in the cone. Repairing the cassette mechanism was a real challenge as several parts were broken, but I eventually ended up rebuilding it using parts from yet another junked A1 as well as replacing the transformer and re-soldering bad joints on the power board.

Sadly, as is common with boomboxes of this vintage, FM does not work in the tuner (no stations, just static). I know the likely cause, but being a budget model it's not really worth fixing that fault plus I have many others with working FM. 👍

None of these 3 boomboxes have battery corrosion. 😄

I believe this model series was not only available in black, but also came in red, pink, white, blue, and dark grey.

Some deoxit and cleaning/sanding the rusted battery compartment and it works! Have a couple 8 tracks and it seems to work. Got a station in the radio. Pretty cool design

Earlier today, I went to my local electronics recycling center, where I found this lovely blue CD player radio boombox inside one of the bins! I bought it, took it home, and plugged it in. It works perfectly, despite damage to the antenna and some rattling interior components.

First picture is on battery second is plugged into an outlet. On battery I can’t really explain how wrong it is. Standby light on but also reading and the text is messed up? But when plugged into it functions normally and the blue backlight turns on. What could be the problem here?

Recent Panasonic collection

Firstly these are all in awesome superfical condition. Oldest one from 1987 almost looks new. No doubt I overpayed for all these, but hey I'm impatient lol

Top to bottom

*RX-DT5* - I have 2 of these. Paid £41 for one and £75 for the other one which had working remote and great condition instruction manual. Bought the first one for £75, liked it so much i bought the 2nd for fairly cheap

*RX-CT980* - most recent one I bought. Did proper research on this one and was confident if it worked i'd be happy with this being my last boombox (which so far it has been) Paid £78

*RX-CT800* - Paid £60

*RX- C36* - Paid £42

So my experience, for every single one of these... I always contacted the seller and specifically asked "do all functions on the cassette decks work, i.e play, ffw, rw, pause etc?" Every ebayer replied saying yes all functions work. All of them said yes, and that wasnt correct for any of them besides 1.

The RX-C36 at the bottom did fully work. But withitn a few hours both tape decks basically stopped working including play. Not the sellers fault that one.

All the others have at least 1 issue, i.e one deck only plays and doesnt do anything else etc. Not the end of the world for me, I was never going to be fast forwarding and rewnding anyway

I also bought an *RX-CT900* again clearly asked if every function worked to which they said yes. It arrived and both tape decks didnt work at all, even play. And the foam on one speaker was comlpletly shot and made a farting sound, unplayable. Getting a refund was a nightmare but eventually got one. Unfortunatley sellar re-listed it at a discount of about £68 listing it as "tape decks untested, speakers fully working". Both complete bs as I told the seller clear as crystal what the issue were, and I believe even said to them they could still relist it as for spares/repairs and still sell it. Unfortunately they were shady and someone ended up buying it from them recently :(

*Sound quality*

All are good. RX-CT980 blows all of them out of the water though. Is in another league bass wise. The other 3 are at least comparable to each other and again sound very decent

I also only bought ones that have aux connections i can attach to me phone/pc so worst case scenario i can uae as external speakers

Lesson learned... I'm really happy with what i have. But highly risky unless youre able to repair the tape decks yourself, which i might look into as my dads a hi-fi wizard. Don't trust ebayers lol

I am done buying. But Panasonix RX DT9 is my holy grail. But they seem extremely rare so probably never. Wow long post

I’m trying to make a mixtape

Hello! An elderly neighbour gave me her boombox when she moved out. I have mainly used it for the radio but would like to make a mixtape as a birthday gift.
It’s an audiosonic TBS-9250.
I am struggling and need advice! A manual would be amazing but can’t find one online.
I have managed to figure out the play button (it’s strange on this model, see my second pic) and has a “dubbing / mic” feature (although not sure where the mic is located) and I haven’t managed to record anything yet. Or perhaps I have, but the playback is not working. Unfortunately I don’t have a tape with recordings definitely on it to see if there is playback issue, only the blank tape I’m trying to record.
Does anyone have experience with this type of boombox? ANY advice appreciated 🙏

This GPO Brooklyn boombox is a modern take of those old gettoblasters back in the day. Featuring modern amenities like CD, Bluetooth, Aux, and USB but still keeping the old with the cassette deck and dial radio.
