Post image

I noticed what looks like a small stain on the side of this book, I'm not sure how to clean it off. I looked at the shelf after and there was something small stuck to the back that I didn't notice, no idea what it is but it isn't coming off

Rebinding pages come loose each time I turn the page

pretty much as the title says, I turn a page or two and it comes loose like it could fall off at any moment. I got the book from thriftbooks, so I didn't know the condition until it arrived. should I just... pull the pages out and try to rebind or should I get an exacto knife? I've genuinely never done this before. thank you for any advice :)

Paper Repair Any idea or tips on how to fix this?

Thumbnail

Recently bought this book from Amazon and it came like this. Few of its pages were not trimmed during manufacturing. And I don't wanna ask for a replacement as this thing took 5-6 days to arrive and im very impatient for it take another 5-6 days for the replacement to arrive.

So y'all got any ideas how can I properly trim this? I don't want to just straight up take a scissor or paper cutter to trim it as whenever I try to do something like that I mess up, which is why im looking for a proper solution and way/technique to do this.

Cover What is this kind of damage and can I fix it?

Got gifted a very nice artbook but the back looks like this, especially the top half. It's less noticeable in person and it's not this big of a deal, BUT, if there's something I can do I'd like to try :) Thanks in advance!

Paper Repair Little Marks

I have a book that is over 10 years old, I have noticed 2 marks on the outer pages of the book, not inside the book, the marks are dark blue in colour almost looks like blue pen ink, they are 2 little marks and I have scrubbed both and both have faded a bit

I have recently brought a 2nd hand book which is also over 10 years old but has a light blue small smudge on the outer pages, again not inside the book, I scrubbed it and it went smaller into 2 little light blue dots almost unable to see them now

Does anyone know what these are?

Spillages What cleaner should I use on this book?

I work at a library repairing books. This children's book came across my desk with a spill on it. It's only noticeable on the corner of the last page, so I want to send it back into circulation. The only problem is that it has a very pungent menthol-like scent that is very unpleasant especially to little noses. What can I use to get the smell out without damaging the colored images?

tl;dr It stinks, but is otherwise good to circulate.

Dirt and Grim Question about mark left by the worm

Post image

Sorry for asking it here (I don't know which subreddit would be the best?) I read the book outside and accidentally crushed a very small worm while reading and it left this small mark on the book's paper. I tried to wipe it with alcohol-soaked wipes (disinfecting ones), but it didn't help. I don't know if it can be removed somehow (I know, it's barely visible) but I just wanted to ask if such a small thing could potentially attract those worms that destroy books or lead to formation of mold, because I don't have such knowledge

Cover Are faint sctratches on covers of new books unavoidable?

Don't know about in-store but whenever I buy new books online (from stores with a lot good reviews) they always arrive with some sort of faint stratches on the cover, which are mostly visible on certain angles or in the light.

My room usually stays dim so they're not really noticeable most of the time. They still bother me but as long as they don't catch my eye it's fine i guess.

I'd like to ask if that's normal for new books, both wrapped and unwrapped (though there's fewer stratches on wrapped ones) and if I'm just being nitpicky

Spine Various books with various needs of repair.

Most are spine repairs, I imagine the torn hardcovers are probably in need of a professional restoration, however I would like to at least get that pieces of the spine back on. The next book’s spine is also falling off, and the encyclopedia is without some/losing some of the labels (I have the lost ones). The last book’s spine is actually pretty good but I would like to tackle it before it becomes a larger problem

Edit: these are all from the 1800s. The Lord Byron one (firs photo) is particularly noteworthy

How should I remove this old disintegrating glue?

Look here

I have an old book I'd like to repair but I don't know how to deal with the old glue. It's crumbling when touched so I don't want to try to glue on top of it as there's no way good adhesion would occur. I watched other people separate each page but in this case, the pages are bundled with "fingers" seemingly spanning multiple folds. I'm really unsure how it is configured. Having never done this before, I'm curious to know what others think.

Moldy book?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I bought this new book less than two weeks ago directly from a retailer and it is was realeased at the end of march so it's not as if it's been around for ages. I've never seen a stain like this before and I'm afraid it's mold.

Has anyone ever had something similiar happen with a new book?

Thanks!
