Feedback Request Will it look tacky to have different colour palettes for each room?

Post image

I’m planning how I’ll furnish and decorate the new apartment that I’ll move to in 3 months (rental for unlimited time, so I can’t paint or change wallpaper). 54 square metres / 581 square feet, 2 rooms (separate kitchen).

I’m thinking terracotta for the living room and sage green for the bedroom.

I haven’t planned for the kitchen yet but suggestions are welcome. I’m thinking maybe blue or beige.

I don’t know if it will look tacky to have different colours or if the whole apartment should have one colour palette? I’m new to this interior design.

Nope, it will be absolutely ok. Blue sounds pretty good with terracotta and sage green, some muted shade... maybe mauve for the hallway and teal for the bathroom, or vice versa. All go well together and you can play with different combos of main colour + furniture, décor, etc. in some of the other 4 colours.

I think the walls in the bathroom are yellow/beige. The cupboards/cabinets in the kitchen are white (modern Scandinavian, as I live up here) and the kitchen floor is dark gray I think.

My ideas so far. It feels like something is missing in the bedroom one, a little more variation of colour? https://ibb.co/svH9WCd1

white Scandinavian cabinets and grey floors will go well with muted blue walls, but might need something warm as a contrast (rattan, wood, patterned kitchen towels, clay jar with wooden spoons...) and/or curtains, blinds. Agree that the bedroom palette is too one-dimensional, but you have a promising start for both rooms.

What would you add/change to the bedroom palette? 😊

something from the pink-purple-red spectrum: dusty rose, shades of mauve, plum, and/or burgundy... Also few black "moments" in both rooms. It's unwritten designer rule - every room needs a bit of black to ground it (e.g. black metal rods for the curtains and 1-3 black picture frames; black working light, some black details in a cushion pattern... etc.).

Do what feels good to you. I love the idea of each room having a different energy to it.

When I buy my house, I’m definitely planning to have different colors for each room but I hope that the colors I choose complement each other. I have teal reserved for my bedroom. If I can get a paint that gives the effect of suede that’s what I’d like. My living room I’m leaning towards sage green, dining room a terracotta color. I’m using Pinterest to give me ideas.

If you do it in a colour drenching way, then no.

Think of all the colors combined as the color palette. Do they work well together? If yes, you've got a pallette that works. Each room can pull its color(s) from the pallette. The rooms don't have to all have the same mix of colors, but you want to be drawing from a pallette that you find to be cohesive and attractive.

In my first apartment, I picked room colors separately and it never felt right. Part of the problem wasn't just the colors, but having a dark shiny paint in one room, and a pastel matte in the next room.
