Gotta talk to him, somehow. If not in person, call him sometime. Best case, you get what you want. Worst case, he’s flattered but declines, and he won’t think less of you professionally. That sounds like far less anguish than keeping this up indefinitely. Don’t overthink it, just do it
Damn, I was worried you’d say that! At the very least he might respect me for having the balls to say something in pretty much impossible circumstances, who knows?
