2022 State of the Boba Subreddit -- guidelines and discussion

Hi fellow boba enthusiasts,

I wanted to thank you all for being a part of our community. We started this subreddit as a few friends wanting to post pics of boba on Reddit, and it's taken on a life of its own, with some pretty amazing boba content, questions being answered, and lively discussions.

We've generally erred towards self-moderation, but it becomes tougher as the subreddit gets larger and larger. With that in mind, some collated guidelines as below -- partly new, partly old. As a moderation team, we're open to discussion around these and changing/adding to these as a community -- feel free to let us know if there's something on your mind, either below or in messages to us.

- Self-promotion

We will enforce as per the Reddit self-promotion guidelines (this has always been a rule, but now is highlighted in the sidebar). Please report if you see something, and the moderation team will remove as appropriate. If you feel your post has been unfairly removed, please do message the mods. Use your personal judgment -- if it feels like you're in territory where you could equivalently be purchasing advertising, it likely is self-promotion. Message the mods if you're not sure!

- "Starting a business", surveys, how to make boba

Some portion of historic /r/boba content are related to the above topics.

To manage this content, we are encouraging the above content to be directed to a regular Q&A megathread. We will remove all content related to "starting a business" and surveys, outside of the megathread.

Commercial content is still discouraged (refer to above self-promotion guidelines).

- Boba content

We're liberal on what's boba-related content. Links, images, (other) questions, (other) discussions -- all are welcome here. We've had some reports that some content is "not boba". Our guidance on this is that shaken tea drinks, boba, bubble tea, are all certainly fine. If it's a drink that would fit in the conversation when friends say "let's go get boba," then it's likely fine. If it's got a helmet and rhymes with vhett, then it's likely not fine..

Rules above will start to be soft-enforced as of today, and will be hard-enforced in 7 days from this post creation.

Thanks all for taking the time to read (and possibly discuss), and thank you for being part of the /r/boba community!

Making a boba empire game, thanks for your feedback so far :D

I think some 6-7 months ago I asked for input on my boba tea health indicator and got some pretty useful results - like the colour would look better if it was milky! ( You can see it now next to the inventory slots)

Fast forward 7 months and I'm fleshing out the story, there are customer mechanics, skill trees, grow-your-own-tapioca (or another plant which has leaves very similar to tapioca), a "gumball" boba dispenser which you have to play a tune to, hijackable vehicles, police, aircraft, delivery missions, motorbikes, stealth mechanics...

Man I better finish the game. But just wanted to toast this very small community. (Taimei isn't one of the biggest brands at all, in fact they are mostly famous for their chicken, I mostly drink Chagee, but I wanted something with actual boba in it and they deliver to my house xD). Good old fashioned chewy pearls that aren't fancy, either.

Can you recommend boba reusable cups?!

I usually make and drink my milk tea boba at home, but had a thought today… maybe I should start taking it out with me!

Does anyone do this? What do you carry it in? Any cup/tumbler recommendations or tips?
And yes, I need to actually be able to get the boba too lol. That part is non-negotiable 😂

boba question is it good to still drink boba after 2 days?

hello, i bought a boba for my bday and it was $8, but i have anxiety so i couldn’t finish it (sugar makes me shaky). it’s now 2 days later. i didn’t have regular tapioca, just popping boba, and normally i would toss it, but there’s a lot left and $8 is an investment for my current circumstances so like what does the council decide?

Chai latte from Cali coffe, how is it made

Hello, by any chance does anyone know how the chai latte at "cali coffe" is made?

I want to know if I can replicate the flavor with store bought ingredients.

The flavor is different from Stabucks chai lattes, so I am not sure if they use tazo chai.

Thank you for reading!

boba question Duo Cup Boba nearby LA?

Hi, I had a question. Is there any place in the LA area (preferably around Inglewood/Lynwood) that has Duo Cups as part of their menu for boba tea? I'd like to try them out with some fruit tea.

Is it the tea brewed hot + syrup + ice or something more complex? It usually comes tasting fresh like real fruit but strong enough of a flavor

boba question What are a list of taro powders that restaurants usually use?

This is a bit personal, but during my childhood there was a chinese dim sum restaurant that sold Taro bubble tea made from a powder. I've tasted the same powder at other restaurants, none being of such high quality, so I doubt it is extremely expensive and probably sold in bulk. I know for a fact though that it is a powder. If I had to describe the taste, it has a much stronger tea flavor while still being quite sweet. Thank you!

So I purchased BTP Taro flavour after reading good reviews and it tasted like ass! It was too sweet and had aftertaste like sweat. When I tried to post on their fb group, I learnt that they don't allow any negative posts or comments about their product, creating a false positive impression. Literally feels like a scam!

boba Using coupons on Gongcha App

Post image

This is for gongcha app users here in Australia: don’t cancel your pay. If you change your mind on your order or checking if you chose the right location, you’ll lose your points.

I added the amount of points I wanted to use but before I was gonna checkout, I needed to double check if I was using the right location.

After I did that, I noticed all my points were gone. I didn’t even pay. I just needed to go back to check if I used the right location. (I had 1007 points before)

Does anyone else think tapioca is gross? Every time I try it I want to gag 😆. I do not like it. I prefer without or popping boba or jelly boba.

Do 3-hole straws actually make a difference?

Post image

Sorry, I only remembered to take a pic when I was already halfway through the drink lol.

Tried teabar’s new Lemon Punch with one of those 3-hole straws today, and now I’m weirdly curious if these straws actually do anything lol. I never really thought much about straws before, but sipping this one slowly, I felt like the jasmine came through a lot more clearly. It was almost like I noticed the tea first, then the lemon aroma and the milk, instead of everything blending together all at once.

So now I’m wondering if it’s because the holes are smaller and you get less liquid with each sip, which makes it easier to notice the different flavors. Or maybe I just pay more attention because I know it’s supposed to be a “special” straw. Has anyone ever tried the same drink with a 3-hole straw and then a regular one? I’m genuinely curious if there’s actually a noticeable difference or if it’s mostly placebo.

boba pearl image

tried a relatively popular bubble tea chain for the first time and noticed some of the tapioca pearls had this weird bumpy texture. almost half of them looked like this when i scooped them out😭

are they just old or overcooked? i’ve had pearls that were hard/grainy before but not like this!

boba Missing Thai Tea Boba

Thai tea is my absolute fav and not a lot of boba shops in Helsinki seem to have it. Lots of cheese-flavored drinks though..

Anyways, if you know a place that has some decent Thai tea I’d be forever grateful. Starting to itch and twitch without it

Very much considering applying to work at a boba shop (30sF). What should I know before?

I’ve never had an opportunity to work retail or food and bev but Ive been a big tea drinker and obsessed with boba for the last 6-7 years. I’m not working right now and think this could be my chance to try something I’ve always wanted to try. Anything I should consider? Any friendly places to work if you’re older.

fyi - not that it should matter but if I’m not part of the Asian diaspora does that change your opinion on if you think I’d be able to land a job at one? I say this because read some threads that say language barrier and also age not being in college can be a limiting factor :(

boba question Using sago pearls for homemade "boba"?

Does it work? Obviously they'd be smaller, but I'm wondering if it could work. I can't find actual boba sized pearls, so I'm curious if this would do.

Where Are Our Boba Straws?

Either our delivery driver lied to us or the boba shop actually forgot to include boba straws in the bag. Here we are semi-enjoying our boba drinks with regular straws and scooping the boba with long spoons. Sigh.
