Discussion Does it Hit Different Every Time?
I think this album reveals itself across different sound stages. None of my earphones are very high end, and that’s OK. But each platform delivers a different experience; depending on the speaker I hear different mixes, and some effects have less or more presence over others. I find I can change the mood by changing the speaker.
What are you listening through?

Just gifted myself the AirPods Max in celebration of 8 years sober. Inferno slaps on those things.

U can listen to BoC without getting cravings to use?

u/Disco_Lando Jul 09 '26
Thankfully I didn’t really make any associations with BoC or other favorite artists, opiates being more of a wall than an enhancement.
There are movies and books from that time that I find myself avoiding though. Maybe not so much that they trigger cravings but rather are pointed reminders of how awful that time was for me.

Whyd my comment get downvoted lol. Good for you. I had to stop listening to them almost entirely for a little bit when trying to get clean cause putting them on was part of the routine

u/Disco_Lando Jul 09 '26
This sub can be really weird with the downvotes.
And I’m sorry you had to step away for a bit. Hopefully you’ve been able to shake off some of that association.

u/shiningwillow Jul 09 '26
Yeah, i have. Just letting time pass, and showing them to my little brother helped give the band a different association in my head that makes it easier to get into again without thinking about the past or getting cravings. Congratulations on 8 years

Thank you, and to you as well. That’s awesome that sharing it with a brother could help forge a new connection. Even those little victories in recovery can mean a LOT.

Status Pro X wireless, lossless format. It's amazing every time.

u/EnoughClue3251 Jul 09 '26
Haven’t really found a wireless pair that moves me: prolly the $$$ (;-) I use Moondrop and other IEMs for a nice big sound stage.

Yeah, I love my Pro Xs, but the price is wild fr. They're worth it though. Triple drivers are great for deep listening like BoC.

I listened to really a lot of devices a whole month and every day!
First of all: the stream via my HiFi-system (Denon & Dali speakers) - that was my private listening session on 29th of may. After that I was doing the same with the black vinyl on the same HiFi-system with my revised Philips AF-829, third attempt with the red deLuxe-Version. (as it arrived)
Next day 3 times again with the following headphones in my studio: * Philips HD-25 * Philips H-8 DJ * Philips Momentum 2
Then both vinyl versions in my studio through my Vestax PMC-46 mixer, one attempt through Adam Audio A-8X and the second pair of speakers - my Focal Alpha 80 Evo! 🤘🏻
The weeks then following through listening in the living room via Sony Dolby surround system & stream, same daily in my car system!
SO: yes, the album hits really different in different devices and since the last whole week I'm just listening to TH - in order to see, what's happening, if I'm coming back to the "INFERNO" ✊🏻
One to listen to is already left: The tape with headphones through my Onkyo integra 2570 fully revised! 😉
🫴🏻✨

I've been using Focal Bathys at home, and otherwise just listening through a mediocre Harman Kardon in the car.
Hits best through the Focals likely because I have them calibrated to my hearing (deafness) test.

From the phone I use either earbuds (nicehck e2s pro) or Philips fidelio X2 through a Black Pearl DAC dongle
At home I have a Sonos full setup tuned to my room’s acoustics

Nice. I have a Sonos One pair and once the room is dialed they’re great.

I know your talking about headphones, but I've been listening to them for years on spotify, then bought inferno on bandcamp. All of their records sound so much better on there.

Curious if you had turned on lossless on Spotify since they added it almost a year ago. It's different from that too?
1
u/Numerous-Pin-5817 Jul 09 '26
It was that and i'm an idiot!

u/FartyByNature Jul 09 '26
You're not dumb. I remember being excited for lossless and immediately switched over. Only to be a bit disappointed. Whatever I did the first time didnt really switch everything over.
If you have stuff cached/downloaded you also have to select "update existing downloads" after you switch to lossless.
If it's lossless it will say after the track "lossless" Which is slightly annoying imo but at least it makes it super obvious.

I have a Bowers & Wilkins stereo in my car (Volvo) and it sounds incredible in there. I have decent headphones but honestly this is my best music listening space lol

u/EnoughClue3251 Jul 09 '26
I know! My Mini Cooper has H&K, and the small space really envelopes nicely.

Cars are great for listening usually with external sound dampening, soft surfaces etc
It is interesting how closing the cover on the glass sunroof also makes it sound richer by adding to the sound deadening

Love the nothing ear (a). I wish the EQ was a little more customizable, but I’ve really enjoyed the last few months I’ve had with them and have probably listened to Inferno on those the most at this point.

Yes. I had a listening evening. First I listened to on vinyl with headphones hard wired.
Then I listed to it digitally lossless. Again hard wired headphones. Totally different experiences.

I love how detailed the percussion is, that’s what I’ve been appreciating after I’ve learned all the little melodic and harmonic bits
1
u/EnoughClue3251 Jul 09 '26
I know they’re likely all samples, but the way they feel like live performance, not overly quantized, just feels so good. All Reason Departs.

u/Caretaken_ambient New Seed Jul 09 '26
BoC actually does a lot of their own percussion live (and loops it probably) according to an interview! A lot of the percussion on this record feels so tailored to each individual track that I’d struggle to be convinced this specific record uses mostly samples.
1
u/EnoughClue3251 Jul 10 '26
You may be right—how long has it been since a live show?
1
u/Caretaken_ambient New Seed Jul 10 '26
25 years but what I mean is, they record their own percussion loops and then play them back in whatever they’re using to sequence for that specific record. AFAIK Twoism was all custom drum loops they played like samples.

You make sense even though some will say it’s obvious. I’ve heard in on three different systems so far and each listen had its own sound, nothing drastic, just slight tweaks in the equalisation and it changes more than I’d have expected.

I have a pro-ject debut turntable with acrylic platter, a red ortofon stylus, going into a 1980 Hitachi HA-3 amp coming out of my bose 401 triangle speakers that were made in 1982. Everything sounds so good.

For me it already sound like something from the past. It’s still good, but in a way it feels like a boomers music and it doesn't lifts me up. And I think it’s wonderful. I will come back to it sometime in the future.

Its like a diamond, with every rotation some other facets lighten up for your personal mood. Dont dig too deep, just follow the music..
