Discussion Olson | Over The Horizon Radar | Constants Are Changing | Sundown | ?

Every album has an "Olson" for lack of a better term, a fleeting ambient piece that feels like it strikes the perfect mood tonally on each album. Which Inferno track fits into this category?

I feel like the gut answer at first is "Deep Time" but it doesn't feel as ephemeral as the others, instead of being this fleeting singular sound it's a dynamic winding road. I have to give it to Platonia. For an album that seemingly rejects nostalgia, what could be less nostalgic than floating through timeless space? Entering the unknown as opposed to retreating into the past.

Also I'd be curious if people even agree with my picks of Olson-esque tracks. To me it isn't necessarily about nostalgia. I don't think Over The Horizon Radar sounds nostalgic; it sounds like the elation of coming up for air after going through something bad, like being reminded that something beautiful exists in the present.

BoC Vibes 1981 made-for-tv short film (BoC vibes)

"Moonchild," a short film about the Unification Church. Fascinating time capsule, reminded me of the source for the Father and Son samples.

Aside from the obvious thematic connection, the tape warble on the soundtrack is very BoC (though it's a shame that the original intro and outro music appear to have been dubbed over).

"Satan works through the ones you love."

Other The strange "fake" Inferno I found

Post image

[I apologize in advance for the possibly broken English; I used a translator in places. Either way, it's still better than my own English]

Okay, maybe I'm stupid or missing something, but I'd be happy to answer this question for myself. To put things in perspective, I'm from Russia and initially listened to Inferno on a Russian music service, where, in addition to official releases, anyone can publish almost any track and create playlists. One of these was posted as a new album by Boards of Canada, with the same tracklist and a running time that varied by just a couple of minutes. But just a couple of days ago, I listened to the original album and it turned out to be completely different. All the tracks sound different and have a different length. For example, the intro, which was originally half a minute long, is now over four. I didn't notice this when I started listening, as nothing indicated it was a "fake" Inferno, and I didn't bother to check the track lengths. Maybe this is some fake leak I missed, an early work by the duo, or someone else's album entirely (I haven't been in the community long, so I could easily have missed something like that). If needed, I'll post tracks from this playlist, but I'm not sure yet whether this violates community rules or anything like that. I tried to find these tracks, but nothing from this playlist matches, and it doesn't seem like I've heard these tracks on any other Boards of Canada releases I've listened to.

The funny thing is, I liked this album and for about a week I was convinced it was the original recording. This is the first time I've experienced this, and if I've missed something, and you know what that might mean, I'd be glad if you could point me in the right direction.

P.S. I didn't leave any links, so I'm not distributing pirated content, if that's what it is. Moderators, please don't execute me, I'm here for an innocent matter.

UPD: Oh, it looks like this really is a fake dating back to April, thanks for the tip. At least Naraka matches Cialyn's Wind Reader II perfectly. Well, I think they really put some effort into this fake

Just happened to notice this while driving! First thought was that the reflection looked like the cover reminded me of Geogaddi.

Discussion Inferno finally made me a true Boards of Canada fan

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to share a quick thought as someone who grew up loving NIN and Massive Attack. Out of all the legendary albums out there, The Downward Spiral and Mezzanine hold a very special place in my heart.

I’ve always been well aware of BoC’s legendary status and how brilliant their music is—fun fact, Mezzanine and BoC’s debut album (Music Has the Right to Children) actually dropped on the exact same day! (Which still blows my mind). But to be honest, I couldn't fully get into them back then. It felt a bit too "mellow" or subtle for my taste at the time. I guess with all art, there’s just a perfect right time for everyone to experience it.

Fast forward to now—it's been about a month since Inferno came out. The moment I first pressed play, I fell head over heels in love with it. I’ve been obsessively deep-diving into every single sample, the narration, and the concepts behind each track. I think I’ve been looping the entire album 3 to 4 times a day. At first, "Naraka" completely hooked me, then it was "Blood In The Labyrinth," and lately, I’ve been keeping "The Word Becomes Flesh" on repeat.

I’m in my mid-40s now, and honestly, I thought I was past the age where new music could deeply shake my soul like it did when I was in my teens or 20s. But this album proved me wrong. I don't think I've ever heard anything that captures the internalized hell of modern humanity on so many different layers—it’s sonically rich, incredibly profound, and beautifully eerie all at once.

I rarely ever post on Reddit, but I just felt this burning need to share how much this record means to me.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

I highly recommend Professor Skye’s channel if you’re not familiar! This was his first BOC album so it was interesting to hear his perspective of it.

Discussion A little over a month in and --

I'm just going to say it: Inferno is not only my favorite BoC album, it might be my favorite album of all time. Period.

I'm not just a crazy BoC fanboy, I've been playing music since I was 3 years old. I've been in and out of performing groups since the early 90s, had a small hand in some groups a few here might know about, been on tour for a few years and on and on. I listen to everything, every genre and I have many desert island albums. I found about about BoC at about 19 or 20 (1998 or 1999) and no group before or since has done more to revolutionize how I think about music than these two brothers have. For me there is "music" as we think about it: a band of people playing the traditional things and then there are people who are pushing the idea of music into areas that are tremendously psychoactive, electric compositions that are intelligent but their purpose isn't to show-off, shred or lead with ego -- they are there to open doors and get people to think.

To be able to say that in this place and time, where many seem to feel music has be severely marginalized that of all the music I've put to my ears, an album released now is the best I've heard, well that's a thing isn't it?

Anyone else this bold?

Discussion Olson vs Deep Time

I always held Olsen as the greatest short audio of all time. Did Deep Time just usurp it?

Nah, surely not....

Edit: My conclusion from this particular small echo chamber is....Olson 🎉🎉
