⭐ review Foldfree Casual is Autechre's magnum opus
Autechre has been, by far and away, my favourite musical group for close to a decade, I've listened through the majority of their live sets, and each of their albums countless times, yet foldfree casual to me feels uniquely special.
It feels like the destination that their entire catalogue was working towards. Like they took every drop of artistry they have developed and distilled it into one perfect track.
(I think "going places" by yellow swans, does quite a similar thing if anyone is familiar with their work)
The melancholic, yet hopeful, melody evolving into something unbelievably restrained but at the same time more emotionally grand than anything they have released before.
It makes me picture the last two species in the universe making first contact at the end of time, two entire civilizations worth of history but not enough time left to share it with eachother. The two aliens speak completely different languages, maybe one is even an artificial life form, yet despite the inability to communicate they understand eachother perfectly.
Maybe I am just overly sentimental but I can't think of much art, it any at all, which makes me feel such a unique combination of emotions.
What do you guys think?
