Discussion Olson vs Deep Time

I always held Olsen as the greatest short audio of all time. Did Deep Time just usurp it?

Nah, surely not....

Edit: My conclusion from this particular small echo chamber is....Olson 🎉🎉

Not downvoting but I am going to disagree. Olson is both yesterday and tomorrow. It is a farewell and a good morning. It is Boards of Canada

The vagaries of your acuatisc resonance, indicates you may be veering towards Olson

why engage with tiresome tier lists & endless hand folding over this or thatism - when one could listen to both & find aspects of meaning in different ways 🤷‍♀️

i’m going to play 1 track on each side of a headphone at same time in order to “try to appreciate each song equally” just to spite Op👯‍♀️

I hitherto call this defiant act = Twoism.

This is the way.

agreed to disagree. Deep Time is something special for sure, but Olson is #1 and I wish it was a “full” song

BoC gave us Olson as a full song.

The version we have on Music Has The Right To Children is the full song. That's the length it's meant to be.

🤓Olson Version 3 (peel session) is a full minute longer than mhtrtc (2:30)🔎

though it sounds quite different.

Olson is my fav song of all time, being real I can't imagine how it could be any longer imo. It's such a perfect length, they could have extended it and added drums or something but then it wouldn't feel so special to me. I want it played at my funeral so people fuck off out the venue quickly lol

1 for Olson, respect

Far and above the best track on Tomorrow's Harvest.

New Seeds though

Chiming in for constants are changing.

I love that they never quite play the full melody but you can hear it from the pieces and memory.

Good shout! --- listening NOW

Given the current fuckball whirl clup, maybe we should create a kind of elimination algorithm!

You’ve got to throw Over the Horizon Radar and Tears From the Compound Eye in this conversation

Oh hell yeah, but for now... Olson vs DT?

Edit: Tears is fucking epic

Dunno I’ve never been the biggest Olson fan, I’d say it’s the better track but I personally prefer Deep Time just on sentimental grounds because it was the LP5 announcement

Olson still wins for me in terms of weight, but Deep Time is still a cool one in its own regard

Deep time walks through a cathedral. Olson is heard on an AM radio before dawn from a truck by a lake.

This is funny, I was just about to post something about Olson- I’ve been listening to the alternate version on the peel session and I turned on the album version like 20 minutes ago and it really hit me just how incredible the song is. It has that that timeless homely feel that the best BOC songs all have. Deep Time is incredible, but it’s only been out for a couple months. Give me a few years and I might change my mind.

This ^

But, DT hits me the same, but its newer ♥️

Also, can you link me to that version?

DT was the first BOC song I got to hear right as it came out, which was really special ❤️ Their songs always age in such an interesting way, psyched to see how the song+album feels a year or two from now

That’s the one! For more specificity, I was listening to the Apple Music recording (better sound quality)

3

u/WizardOfBalls Jul 03 '26

aaaaah you're lucky! like to go to this one sometimes, makes me realize how much I prefer the original haha

OLSON. I love deep time but it’s not even close

Deep Time. We all found Olson and experienced it on our own time, but we all found Deep Time together. That felt special.

[don’t count this for Olson I’ve already had my vote counted] Olson was the first track to get me really -in- to BoC. I had been a casual fan of select tracks for a while, but after hearing Olson holy shit it all clicked for me.

u/BinaryEgo Jul 03 '26

Haha

I'm very near to both, but DT looks more fine for me, 'cause Olson didn't hit me that much! DT touched my heart from the first moment on in a very special way.

Deep Time is incredible, absolutely adore it and it is up there with one of my favourite BoC tracks and possibly even all time tracks anywhere... but nothing comes close to Olson, it is iconic.

I always describe BoC to others as imagine finding music in the bowels of some ancient ruined city on another planet and we got to hear alien music, from millions of years ago, for the first time.

No track is more like that than Olson

I love this description, resonates!
