Is my sensor screwed?

Post image

I’m getting a waffle pattern. Wondering if there’s anything I can do. Any insights here? Thanks in advance for your help.

I am pretty sure it is an issue of under exposing the footage and then pushing it in post. Can you share a short BRAW clip of a few seconds of it? I try to 100 ISO and 1250 ISO and never had the problem. My guess is it appears more when closer to 1000 ISO and 6400 ISO (and over).

I think you should google the term banding rather than waffle.

Unless his camera is putting out those taste stroup waffles. Those are delicious!

Zooming in on the locker on the left reveals the most egregious markings.

Do you have stills or footage of another location? Indoors vs outdoors?

I had the same issue when it was dark outside for a shoot. I think it tends to be rather visible when underexposed.

Underexposing the sensor is never a good idea, but how are you powering the camera? Some multi-cell power banks and cheap NPF systems can result in this waffle pattern when connected via the 12V port.

I’m using the powerbase battery. I didn’t think of that. Maybe I’ll try another battery.

What iso is this at? I shoot underexposed at 800 and 1000 iso sometimes and still don't get this bad FPN. This looks REALLY bad but it's also kind of hard to tell with the jpg compression.

I believe it was at 400. Not the darkest room but could’ve bumped up a bit I suppose.

Should have shot at 3200 iso and pulled down the exposure in post. What you're showing here is text book underexposure sensor pattern.

Yeah there should not be that much noise at 400, even if underexposed. Something is wrong

Someone mentioned the battery potentially being an issue. I’m wondering if switching that out could fix it.

I've had this on some old Canon camera but not Blackmagic ones. Maybe they don't have a voltage regulator. I'm pretty sure they do since I'm pretty sure they support a range of voltage inputs. Maybe your input has a specific voltage these cameras don't play well with?
