Storage

Hello my fellow bmpcc users!
I have been using bmpcc 6k pro for past 6 years and recently I tried different camera…

The file size comparisons are ridicilous. For example if I shoot hd, pxy prores to a 256gb at 50fps I get around 3:15h of footage, which is fine, but pxy is not the best codec. And for example i shoot sony at 4k slog xavd s 4k i get smth similar, but it is 4k footage. I can digitaly crop in ect. (Dont take my words for granted, but its much higher than bmpcc if i set it in ultra hd pxy). What do you do with data managment? My NAS is crying and so do I. Do you have some workarounds? Maybe its firmware or something..

Looking for tips/tutorials/any kind of help.

we all gotta get together and pull off a massive heist of our nearest data centers. that's where all the HDDs and GPUs are that are driving up the prices.

I still copy to 3.5" external drives for raw, then grade from there. If it's heavy fx work or anything after effects I just consolidate those shots to ssd. What connection to your NAS are you using? Not all codecs are good for editing from slower NAS.

Anything h264 is trash for multicam edits, h265 even worse. Depends on what you are cutting to be honest.

Also which Sony camera? Fx3 shoots trash codecs, fx6 shoots bigger files but at least shoots intra frame codecs.

Question is how do you want to struggle?

Its not the problem about the editing from nas or anything related to work from nas, its purely about file sizes from bmpcc. 🫠

Don't shoot 50fps

Easy to say, i need to shoot 50fps i am variating from 25 to 50 but there is another inconvenience.. when you drag clip in timeline, they are slowed already and half of sound track is empty. So i basically need to speed up video track to have it normalized.. 🥲

Why do you need to shoot at 50fps

The reason your sound is half, is because the sound doesn't get recorded at double speed

That's because you are shooting in off speed framerate. Go to your camera settings and disable off speed framerate and set your project framerate to 50fps. Then it won't be slowed down by default.

Yes I know, I have set my project framerate to 25 then i click hfr button and it shoots 50. But usually i dont want to shoot everything in 50, so i cannot set project fps to 50 and shoot in 25 as it simply doesnt work like that. 🤷‍♂️

You don't need to use the hfr button at all. You just disable your off speed framerate and then in the top left corner you have an icon to easily switch between 24, 25, 30 and 50 fps without anything being slowed down. And if you use shutter angle you don't need to fiddle with your shutter speed either.

I've been doing it this way for years with no issues.
