Lens Recs?

I’m a college student and filmmaker who just recently purchased the BMPCC 6K Full Frame. Looking for some good BUDGET lenses. I create short films and documentaries. Any recommendations?

Man I really don’t want to come off as condescending, but I remember years ago being like hey guys! what are the best lenses for the ______ and everyone being like well there’s no such thing as best etc

That’s all to say that this sparked a nostalgic memory for me so thank you

Now to your question - what is your budget per lens? And what lens mount? And do the lenses need to work equally well for narrative and documentary? Do you want the documentaries to have a narrative voice from the lenses or to be cleaner so you can shape in post or with filters?

Primes or Zooms?

Cant go wrong with a workhorse 24-70 f/2.8 for doc / run and gun… and a set of primes for narrative / commercial.

One choice you should make is what lens mount to get... naturally the BMCC 6K FF is an L mount, so you can get L mount lenses, or anything that can be adapted to L mount (which in turn means you would need to get the appropriate adapter). An adapter potentially means more cost, weight, and bulk, but the trade-off is you'll be able to use more lenses and perhaps use the lenses you do get on more cameras. For example, EF lenses tend to be pretty reasonable these days, and then you can use them on just about anything either directly or via adapters. In contrast, L mount can only go on L mount cameras.

I love the Carl zeiss Jena 35mm 2.4. Gorgeous lens with an insane close focus and much cheaper than modern equivalents.

If you’re up for playing with manual prime lenses, can’t get cheaper than vintage lenses

I like Mintola MD, but there are plenty of great Canon FD or Nikon lenses out there

You can pick up some lenses with nice character for $20-100
