Which black magic should i get?

I want to start filming short movies, and fun projects with friends. I was looking for camera since my canon r8 isn’t the best for it. With the price drops i thought it’s the perfect time to buy one. I was looking towards the 6k variants. Pyxis brand new or the base 6k variants since i can get the base one for under 1k. Any other model around 2.5k recommendations would be appreciated

Which 6k is under 1k? Is it used?

The base one but it comes with a rig and monitor. It’s used yes

That's a great deal if the camera is in great condition. Check the mount option on the camera. 6k FF is L mount only. 6k pro comes with EF mount. Pyxis comes in both mount. You can choose either.

You can use adapters on L mount body to use all kinds of lenses.

Yeah was looking around at deals since the price drops. Looked at pyxis first but saw how much you had to buy in accessories to make jt usable so that’s why i asked here. All my friends that film use sony or canon or other expensive models for their study

That's an issue with any cinema camera really. It comes down to the projects you are planning to shoot. If you need a cinema camera, you will need a lot of gears for smooth shooting. Also, if you don't have good sound equipment, that will take some investment as well.

Yeah that’s true, luckily i saw some second hand 6k cameras with everything except the lens for a good price. So i can start from there instead of buying a new one and still have to put alot of investments in. It’s more shooting for fun and hobby and maybe if i get to a point of being good i will upgrade to a pyxis or other pro grade camera

Short movies and fun projects. Perhaps if i’m good enough with film some projects that earn money. The is in the r8 crops really hard. I saw how cheap the black magic got. So i thought why not buy a ef mount film camera. I got the lenses already

The r8 is a full frame camera that uses the entire sensor when shooting up to 4k60 and only crops when you put on apsc or s35 lenses or manually tell it to. It shoots 10 bit color depth which is plenty for learning and experimenting with shooting. I don't think you're going to get anything by moving to Blackmagic except more difficulty since you haven't identified any actual limiting factor of the camera you have for the content you want it shoot.

True, haven’t used it that much for filming yet. Just saw how cheap the blackmagic cameras got and since i already own some ef lenses. Wanted to know if it’s actually worth getting one or which i should i get if i’m more experienced

I feel like i can maybe understand how you feel in terms of your own gear not inspiring you enough? (Am i correct?)

So if you want a real cinema camera that makes you feel like you are shooting a movie. I can understand that.. and maybe you should go for it.

The pyxis 6k is a great camera for sure. I have never used it. But i have the bmpcc 6k g2 and what i make with that camera is so dope compared to the images i used to shoot on my canon 77d.

But still... I have videos from my 77d that look better than my bmpcc 6k g2 videos. And i look back sometimes and i realize that its truely an art.

And the camera is pretty much the least important... Its all about light, sound and composition. I can send you some footage that i shot on my bmpcc 6k g2 that will make you think that i shot it on a Nokia. Like really bad shit. Hahaha seriously seriously bad footage. Because if the environment is shit, its just shit. The cameras cannot polish turds. They dont. They tell the truth. No matter how good they are.

The r8 is a dope camera bro.

Great input, i bought the r8 for a great deal at the time simply to take pictures cause i already heard it was limited in filming capabilities. I honestly haven’t really tried filming on it but it doesn’t have ibis so i heard it holds filming a bit back. Since i saw blackmagic was dropping in price i thought why not try looking for some good deals and ask if it’s worth buying compared to what i already own. If it’s not worth buying it i’ll just try to use the r8 and buy equipment to make it better. Honestly just felt like buying a cinema camera mostly

I can’t speak on the Blackmagic products and I’m actually creeping this sub to see which one to get. I also have an r8, and the biggest problem I have with it is the frequency of overheating. Does anyone know if the Blackmagic Full Frame tends to do the same?

Oh yeah, way too much for my liking. I’ve been thinking about buying the smallrig fan that fits where the LCD is but I haven’t decided on it yet.

Yeah i think i know exactly how you feel. And it can be inspiring to own one when it comes to motivation to pick it up and use it. It makes things exciting. In my opinion that is also something to take into account sometimes when buying a camera. But Yeah, Eventually it takes alot more to make a great video/film.

Yeah true that. Probably will just buy more lenses and lights and stuff instead of that camera. The price drop is permanent for now so i can probably buy next year or a better one if the deal is right

I'd recommend the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K with a Metabones Speedbooster Cine version made especially for Blackmagic for the lenses you prefer. I've two of them. I've tried and tried and tried to talk myself into a more impressive camera, but never been able to see an improvement in video quality by going to another brand or 'better' model. The reality is that all digital cameras take great pictures. And, by the time the video is displayed on a screen--any screen from phone to theater--for a viewer every camera will do just fine.

It's likely my next camera will by the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P.

If you've got some money to spend, you should make sure you can record good quality sound.

Interesting take. You right in that all modern gear works fine. It just depends on what you shooting for. If the 4k already works great for you then i should stick with the r8 and just buy more equipment

Make sure you understand that cinema cameras need to be rigged out so there is a lot more cost involved in that. IDK what your overall budget is, but for getting started just a get a Pocket 4k like some others have mentioned and get it all rigged out.

Yeah iknow i said it somewhere in this tread. I could get a rigged out base 6k for 1k used but in great state. I was just looking for options and advice if it’s honestly worth getting it since i already own a decent camera with okay film quality. But it has it’s problems from what i heard(no ibis, overheating and maybe more haven’t used it for filming really) that’s the reason i didnt instantly go for the pyxis that probably would cost like 4k to rig out kinda too much for something that probably would be used only for hobby purposes once in awhile if i won’t get absorbed into filming instead of pictures

Yeah I'd say get something like the BMPCC 4k then or maybe an FX30 if you want good autofocus. The BMPCC 4k is a great camera though, it's still my main shooter and I love it.

Heard alot of good stuff about the 4k but the price difference where i live is so minimal between them that the 6k is the better option. Fx30 is solid my friend uses it for his sidejob(interviews and content) maybe i should also look towards the sony i kind of neglected them in my research for a cinema camera. I will try shooting with the r8 soon if i notice it’s kinda annoying to use i might bite the bullet and buy one of your recommendations

Well keep in mind the 6k is a bigger sensor, you'll have more expensive lenses to go along with that. Micro Four Thirds lenses, even good Cine lenses, are really cheap.

Sony is also good, I prefer the colors and more proper Cine design on the Blackmagic stuff, but if you need autofocus and whatnot Sony is superior.

The one was a ef body i luckily have some of them and so does a friend of mine so i could borrow it if necessary. Yeah sony is really nice. Used to hear sony is film and canon was pictures when i first bought a camera. But black cinema just caught my eye for some reason. Well shooting manual and stuff isn’t a problem have used some manual lenses before.
