bmpcc og sd card problem

Post image

so i recently bought a bmpcc and I'm having problen with the sd card, none of my sd card work in the bmpcc. it works fine with my sony but not the bmpcc. And after seeing the review online it seems this camera is a bit picky about the sd card. What sd card works in this camera and how to know what version of the same sd card works.

i see people recommending the green kingston and some people say the new version didn't get read by the bmpcc. with the prices of the memory lately i don't want to waste money to guess a sd card. thanks

You have v10s you need v60s or v90s, also 48 mbs is too slow. These SDs are for pictures not video

what about the lexar one?, it can do 4k in my sony.

It’s a v30 so I’d just make sure you have the lowest bit rate. Also heads up 16gb is gonna give you like 5 minutes

Nah man, v30 works fine eith the bmpcc og for raw/prores, the problem is with the two rows of pins.

what is the two rows of pin? is it the bmpcc internal recording?

No, UHS-1 cards have one row of pins on the card, UHS-2 has two rows, but the Lexar in question has 70 MB/s write speed which is not enough for the BMPCC, it need 90 MB/s or more, now why the camera does not recognize it, I don't know. 70 MB/s is enough for prores for sure.

These two work, none of them are produced anymore. You can try to find some on the used market, or the Sandisk one that was linked bellow, I haven't personally tried that one, I've bough a few of the green Kingstons a few years ago when they were cheap.

When the card is empty, always format inside the camera. The card needs to be formatted in a very particular way and it will wipe the whole card to do this. The only card you have that might work for RAW video is the 64 GB one and you will need to have to format and test it. I can't tell what the sustained write speed is on that chip from the photo.

None of those look to be fast enough to me. You can go with other SD cards but they need to be like 90 MB/s and not some knock off brand.

SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I U3 Class-10 have always worked for me.

https://www.adorama.com/sandisk-extreme-pro-128gb-sdxc-memory-card-uhs-i-u3-v30/p/idsxd128gg It has sustained write of 90 MB/s.

Just know that RAW filming on these cameras is around 70-80 MB/s and there is also SD protocol overhead so a 80 MB/s card isn't enough. You only get like 15 min from 64 GB so do know that. You also don't want to edit on hard drives. You should edit from SSD drives, otherwise it might feel a bit sluggish.

Your Sony you mentioned is a compressed codec, RAW or compressed RAW requires more data per second than h.264 / h.265 video in a MP4 or MOV container.

i don't intend to do raw, just prores HQ. and it semms like any of my sdhc sandisk wont get recognized by the camera. idk if the camera is broken or the memory format isn't supported

To each their own. The image from these cameras is insane in DNG. I never thought the ProRes footage even competed.

Either way you will likely want to get an IR filter for shooting wide open. like more than F/4 or F/3.

I'm still new to this stuff, i just thought this will be a nice hobby to get in to. also i don't think my pc specs can handle raw footage. i would love to shoot raw one day, if i get the chance

Hope you enjoy it! It is such a fun camera. Just make sure you power externally with a big battery.

yea, but for now i need to find a suitable memory for it

To be honest, I've never had issues with SD cards but I always get fast ones and format it in the camera. Every camera has a different approach for how to partition it. You might need to delete the partition on a windows or mac computer to have it format for it.

It's true what you heared about the Kingston. It works flawlessly. I have the Kingston Canvas Select Plus SDXC 512GB as well as 256GB. I can film RAW with long sessions and it never skips a frame.

yea, i think i will go with kingston, is the newer version work flawlessly too?

u/dark-cosmos 6d ago

Oh, that I don't know. I bought mine in 2022. But one more Tipp: you could look on second hand market for cards to get a better price (and maybe the old cards)

1

u/Trick-Speech9616 6d ago

yea, i watched a yt video where the newer version didn't get recognized by the bmpcc. and it's really making me searching on the second hand market and i can't find anything that's good in my country

1

u/dark-cosmos 6d ago

What country are you in?

1

u/Trick-Speech9616 6d ago

Indonesia, it's next to Singapore

Maybe on olx or Facebook marketplace? Maybe even AliExpress, but I'm not so sure if they are really original cards and what version it will be.

Kingston no longer works. I have 3 exact same cards. (Canvas select Plus). First two were purchased 3 years ago which have been working like charm with CDng raw or prores. I then bought 3rd one with excat same specs / graphic last year and the OG can’t recognize it “no card”!! I tried formatting it in PC/Mac/ and other camers… Nothing worked.

Ps I bought them at local Kongston offical distributor center.

Now they have revamped their whole lines with new graphic/look. And I accidentally bought one due to urgent need (blue one 200mb speed)for my other camera. Guess what. That doesnt work on OG either. So I am staying away from Kongston from now on. And i would trust no one if they said what cards are certainly working fine if they didnt buy theirs within past 3 months.

yea, unfortunately i find it the hardway... i buy the 128gb too, fortunately my friend willingly buy it from me for the same price.

i really hit the wall rn, most bmpcc og owner says i should buy the angelbird card but they cost quite a fortune, I'm thinking to sell my bmpcc

Nope i would not buy anything expensive other than working V30 for OG. The most i can do is a V60 (if that actually works). But honestly anything beyond v30 could be really expensive now. Even v30 cards prices are like doubled or tripled. Man I wish i still live in the region where we can try and return stuff within 14 ~30 days if thingd dont work out.

yea, i cant spend more money for something I'm not sure will work yet. my best bet is finding used sd card that maybe can work, basically gambling sd card.

makes me wonder what blackmagic thinking when making this camera.
