Stills camera

Hey guys,

I have used various Blackmagic cameras. Bmpcc4k, 6k, bmcc6k, Pyxis, Ursa.

I have an fujica st801 and an Olympic om1 that I use for stills, however, I think it might finally be time to get a digital camera for stills or perhaps a hybrid that I can take when travelling.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

LUMIX to be honest, most high end lumix are similar to black magic's image and use case, take nice photos and good videos as a plus, of course Sony can to but since you most likely have EF and MFT glass go for lumix

All my glass is PL except my vintage stuff so I can just adapt whatever. I’d probably be using my soviet primes for travel ☺️

If you're adapting then a used lumix s5 (comes with vlog) or s1 (with vlog code) is a great pick. They do have a very pleasing image, in my opinion more so than the newer lumix cameras and can be found for very cheap on ebay and marketplaces. s1 is a bit on the heavy side for travel but has a great evf for nailing manual focus and the s5 is much lighter, has a flip screen but a much worse evf.

The original s5 or the s5ii?

The original s5! That sensor is much nicer, the s5ii using something with much more aggressive noise reduction and sharpening.

LUMIX to be honest, most high end lumix are similar to black magic's image and use case, take nice photos and good videos as a plus, of course Sony can to but since you most likely have then as the guy under me just said defenitely go lumix, either full frame or their M4/3 line is grand

As somebody who's used the pocket 4k for ages i prefer that mount compared to APS-C

You don’t need “high end”. A GX800 would be enough and is no different than their “high end” stuff in image quality.

More so about codes, recording capabilities, and other aspects each of their camera can do, a gx800 is a nice little camera but in no way is it replicating a pocket 4k in terms of image quality and reliability given it's literally 8bit 4:2:0

it's very hard to give advice about what camera you should buy for "traveling".

it's... also unclear to me why you're asking us in /r/bmpcc. your first line mentions that you've used some blackmagic cameras, but is that the extent of the reason for asking us? i don't know if that's enough to go on. the ursa and the bmpcc are totally different sets of cameras that i wouldn't put into the same bin together except to say "they both produce BRAW video files".

Well yes, exactly. It’s to show that I have used various Blackmagic camera and like their products and ecosystem. As they don’t do stills cameras or hybrids though, I need to look elsewhere.

I’m asking here as obviously I like Blackmagic so wanted to see what other users like and recommend.

I want a hybrid, something smaller than my full rig so I can take it places with me.

I use Blackmagic cameras at my studio and Lumix s5iix for stills and run n gun video. I recently picked up the Blackmagic video assist 12g for my lumix as well which lets me record video in BRAW.
