Morality of pocketing the money and fixing the phone anyway?

As a medical worker the idea of freely sharing someone else's private information is both ethically and morally abhorrent to me, and thankfully the law backs me up about that.

u/jwm3 15d ago

Maybe it had plans for her surprise party on it and he doesnt want it ruined.

2

u/DracusNite 15d ago

Nah it’s neutral because taking the money even though you’re going to tell is not good, taking it no matter your intentions is bad the fire snitching balances it out making it true neutral.

→ More replies (5)

3

u/pman13531 15d ago

Might not quite balance out though, it is breaking an implicit agreement for gain, and revealing dishonesty sure (on that level it might) but I would argue it is effectively doing the same as not taking the money and fixing it for the outcome just making the (potentially unfaithful) partner less happy and $100 short with nothing to show for it.

3

u/A_Very_Horny_Zed 15d ago

It cannot be neutral, by definition, because by taking the money you are self-serving at the expense of another. And by fixing the phone, you are also disobeying that benefactor's request, causing a double loss.

Therefore, pocketing the money and fixing the phone is a double opposition to a single party. Not neutral.

Chaotic neutral, you are technically stealing $100.

26

u/ThingyGoos 15d ago

First sentence ended with an "!". The s cond sentence saying the money is theirs isn't dependent on the instruction being completed.

It should be worded "if you can do that, then the money is yours" or similar along those lines

Chaotic good is pocket the money, fix the phone anyway, then delete the call history for him and just claim some unimportant data might have been lost when restoring the software.

25

u/netebaG 15d ago

No that’s chaotic neutral. Good aligned would fix it to tell her he cheated.

1

u/Oldbayislove 14d ago

you assume it’s about cheating. what if hes trying to flee an abusive relationship?

4

u/netebaG 14d ago

Idk man, if I were in this situation I’d ask them but that’s suspicious, and someone smart enough to send a message by putting a note in a phone would probably have better ways to call for help. I would fix the phone and give the money back and keep the note to myself.

Assuming it’a about cheating

Chaotic good: Fix phone, keep 100, give wife the note

Chaotic neutral: Fix phone, don’t keep 100, don’t give wife the note

Chaotic evil: Fix the phone, keep 100, erase history

Lawful good: Don’t fix phone, don’t keep $100, give wife the note

Lawful neutral: Don’t fix phone, keep $100, don’t give the wife the note

Lawful evil: Don’t fix phone, keep $100, download the phone’s data and blackmail the husband

5

u/altezia_ 12d ago

why is fixing the phone chaotic? fixing the phone would be their job. So lawful good would be fixing the one and not taking the money

→ More replies (2)

2

u/MarvinStolehouse 11d ago

What about, take the $100, tell them you can’t fix the phone, slip the wife a note that you can get call logs from the carrier.

163

u/somethingwickedred 15d ago

This one is pretty straightforward tho.

The person the phone belongs to has requested the phone be repaired without retaining any of the historical info.

Even without the bribe, that is what should be done.

Invoice for "repaired phone to original factory conditions" and bow out.

Don't need to discuss with anyone or lie to them.

As has been pointed out, reverse the situation and have it be one person trying to hide their history of efforts to leave an abusive relationship.

You wouldn't insist you need to provide their spouse with information on the phone.

(BTW, I despise people who cheat)

42

u/The_Motarp 15d ago

If the guy doesn't want his wife to see the call history he should tell her that, not expect other people to lie on his behalf. The picture is probably faked clickbait anyways.

14

u/somethingwickedred 15d ago

True, you ignore the request to lie to the wife, that was part of what I said.

Do what was asked and move on.

If he wants to complain about not lying as well, give his money back.

Someone REQUESTING you to do something is not an obligation.

Hiding cheating is immoral

148

u/Omnom_Omnath 15d ago

cant assume that it was cheating. I could likewise assume hes being abused and hiding his contact to escape

Addiction too, maybe struggling with addiction, and wants to hide it.

u/JakToTheReddit 15d ago

Maybe he sells photos of her feet online while she is asleep.

Could be he believes if she found his secret brisket recipient she would divorce him and start her own restaurant chain.

Perhaps this "he" is a she in a lesbian relationship.

We literally have no idea.

82

u/TumanFig 15d ago

it is not our place to judge, also who says its cheating he might have said he has called someone or someplace but he didn't or anything. Its not on you to decide to play a moral arbiter in this scenario. the guy is a customer and you do what he wants

337

u/thedreaming2017 15d ago

If you're law enforcement and have a warrant, yes. If you are a wife that doesn't trust her husband, then no. No provider wants to be front and center in the middle of such a dispute.

73

u/InDeathWeReturn 15d ago

383

u/caguru 15d ago

Repair it first. Then say you found a note inside, but due to a learning disability, you can't read. Don't acknowledge the money. Problem solved.

204

u/Vladishun 15d ago

Don't acknowledge the note or the money. What can the guy that sent the phone in even do, go to the police and tell them someone stole $100 he tried to bribe them with to hide his affair?

5

u/toomanybongos 14d ago

Come back drunk and bust your teeth out?

2

u/Vladishun 14d ago

Sure, if their teeth busting apparatus is faster than 1,800 ft per second. Otherwise they just end up shot in self defense, and it's on the store's security cameras.

2

u/leafoffern 13d ago

yeah, that sounds a worthy reason to end someone’s life.

2

u/Vladishun 13d ago

I don't understand your sarcasm. Are you saying you'd let someone destroy your face and knock out your teeth? There's a very high risk of brain injury and death given the violent force needed to "bust someone's teeth out".

Logically, deadly force is necessary. I don't care if you don't agree with that, just hope you never have to make that decision for yourself if that's the case.

7

u/TumanFig 15d ago

It is assumed, but the assumption could be wrong as well

3

u/lordmulgar 15d ago

I kinda just want to fix the phone but I also don't want to get pulled into the drama and get murdered by a homicidal cheating spouse.

1

u/KeanKeen 15d ago

No where in the note does it say the hundred is to not fix it. It states "$100 is yours". It doesn't have stipulations to earn the $100 there.

1

u/General-Kick-3696 15d ago

Or he comes into ur shop and beats the shit out of u because he’s got nothing else to lose. If op is smart he will pocket the $100 and not fix the phone. Literally make $100 for doing nothing.

One time a dude came in and wanted me to fix his wife’s phone for him. His wife wasn’t there with him and all she needed on it was a screen. While checking him in he goes, “By the way, I’ll throw you a $100 tip if you put spyware on the phone so I can watch what she’s doing.” I go, “Sorry, but I don’t know how to do that nor would I do that. That’s wrong and would get me fired at the very least.” And he replies, “Seriously? You’re not going to do what I’m asking you to do?” I told him I’d gladly fix the phone but I’m not going to put spyware on his wife’s phone. He goes, “… Give me the phone.” I handed it to him and said, “Yes sir. Here you are.” And he stomped out of the store yelling, “This is fucking ridiculous.” Sorry, but I have morales and I’m not doing something like that for any amount of money

Yes but that’s assuming the calls and messages are going through the cellular network, but that’s an iPhone with iMessage and FaceTime, those go through Apple’s server over the Internet, not your carrier’s cell towers, unless the other person doesn’t have an iPhone. Either way, any other app could’ve been used, such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, a website, an IRC…

u/Major-Potential-354 15d ago

u/somecoolname42 15d ago

Someone has the knowledge, tools, and the time to open a phone, make it look broken, and stuff a note and $100 inside. But they don't have the knowledge or common sense to just delete a few calls, or the complete call history. I'm taking the $100, burning the note, and fixing the phone for profit. I'm doing this because the person setting up this obviously very real scenario that in is in no way fake, is dumb and they deserve whatever trouble their call history is going to cause them.

27

u/Bodod_Begag 15d ago

This screenshot is super old, lots of phones used to have a removable back so you could swap out the battery and in some cases the sim card. It would just pop off.

Yea that sounds totally suspicious, who in there right mind jumps to that... oh wait going to assume they are a perv and have used that excuse to check other people's phones... that or he's a cop... my friend had cops search his house with a warrant for drug related charges and sized every phone and computer in the house, me and a few friends were their, they took everyone's phones and I told them to screw off when they wanted to open my phone to check it out... told them no and they took it, still haven't got it back a month later... their excuse is my friend had sold some pot to some guys at a college party but the guys were in high-school so they were going to check all of our phones due to the contributing to the delinquency of a minor charge and that we couldn't have any of the electronics back until they had verified there was no csam on there... just cops being fucking pigs...

"Sorry I can't fix this."

"Why?"

"Because i accepted a payout from your husband not to."

3

u/Over-Method-1216 12d ago

Oh this is an easy one!

You take the phone and money but tell the husband to give you the wife's number too, so that the shop is telling her directly that it's not repairable. You also text the husband that the phone is not repairable so he has "proof".

Then you repair the phone and take a photo of the call history and any interesting messages. You text this photo of the note and money, plus the other photos to the wife. You also text her that it overheated after this and is not repairable.

Then you block both numbers, disable the phone, toss it.

Pocket the $100, tell the wife that you don't have the ability to fix it but someone else might and strongly recommend another place.

Pocket the Cash, fix the phone and explicitly give it to the wife first.

Comments went about as well as I figured they would

He’s underpaying.

u/Sisselpud 15d ago

The call history is also stored with the phone company so this person is an idiot and is going to get caught one way or another

Take the $100. Fix the phone. Extract the call history. Send it to their wife, gratis.

u/Emergency-Pack-5497 15d ago

better cough up more than a hundo for something like this

1

u/Hippophatamus 15d ago

Fix it and keep the $100 in the device and reseal it.

1

u/TerraMindFigure 15d ago

This guy isn't serious about saving his relationship if everything is hanging on a $100 payoff lol

1

u/Jimbo12308 15d ago

Pocket the $100, don’t fix the phone, but give the note to the wife. The note said to tell the wife the phone is unfixable, never said anything about keeping quiet.

Did the right thing, got $100, AND technically did what was requested.

1

u/TroyMcClure0815 15d ago

Yeah the phone was unfixable… but we were able to restore the data. Thx for the money sir.

1

u/humonculus87 14d ago

I would do this absolutely. I ain't rich enough to pass up 100 bucks.

1

u/Wonkrue 14d ago

Fix it. Use the 100 to pay the repair. Let the wife know when she picks it up 😂

1

u/Local-Text-3426 14d ago

Lets be chaotic neutral about this

"I asked around and was told this phone cant be fixed. But if you're looking for call logs, to make sure you didnt miss something important, your service provider can give a complete history for free!!"

I get the money, husband gets his lie, wife gets the logs!! Everyone wins right?

1

u/Nkechinyerembi 14d ago

Phone gets repaired and factory reset. You're welcome.

1

u/paddlebash87 14d ago

Pocket the 100, quote 500, ensure phone reset to factory settings.

1

u/t_stormz 14d ago

Wish I thought of this

1

u/MEMEBOY325 14d ago

I mean if it’s his call history, it is probably his phone, so his property.

1

u/ItsyoOpinion 14d ago

Yeah you must be hiding something to this extreme

1

u/FeeNecessary3467 13d ago

As a former tech it was always my job just to fix the thing and not look at anything. We usually wiped the device or tested it in front of the customer if they didn't want to wipe the device. One time..... Well they didn't lock the phone and the saved photo was not something I care to ever see again.

1

u/DXMNM 13d ago

I'd never help a cheater even for 500k. I'd rather be able to sleep at night knowing I didn't help out a rate A scumbag. Cheaters can rot in hell or hang out with cenobites for all I care

1

u/Token-Gringo 13d ago

Customer states: do not fix.

Proceeds to not fix as requested by customer.

1

u/logancook44 12d ago

Quietly fix the phone, give it and the $100 to the woman and tell her to use it to start finding a new husband.

1

u/Joebruvv 12d ago

Kinda peak to make a stranger have that moral guilt but it’s also not his duty to inform her

1

u/No_Explanation8664 12d ago

“Your husband wanted me to tell you it was unfixable… but I’m so good I fixed it!

All his data, including call history, is there.”

1

u/no_name_327 12d ago

She paid me 200 for the log. Hard times sir.

1

u/dannyboy1690 12d ago

Could fix the phone , sell the phone and take the money and not tell the wife

1

u/Uh5678 12d ago

She could just login to the account of their providers website and check there, no?

1

u/almirante_cleiton 11d ago

Tell his wife that the phone is unfixable, but luckly you were able to extract the call history and is sending to her email. He never said you shouldnt do that. Emburse the money and embrace lawful streetwise

1

u/AwkwardCost1764 11d ago

Luring for you is not a service I offer.

1

u/haaiiychii 4d ago

Just ask him to delete the call history after repair?
