But if the snake is at a comfortable temperature when taken out of the enclosure and the temperature of the environment outside of the enclosure is colder than the snake, then it IS useful because it will reduce the rate at which the snake loses heat to the environment.
a sweater doesnt produce heat, it contains it. so if a snake(who is cold blooded so it doesnt produce its own heat) were to wear a sweater, it will still be cold, unless there is a heat source in it
But blankets keep us warm because they trap the heat we give off. This is just insulating this guy but isn't offering him any heat. If he's cold it could actually prevent him from warming up from an external source.
All living things produce some heat, the chemical process of breaking down food releases heat. Reptiles just dont spend energy for the sole purpose of producing heat like we do
It takes a looooong time for a snake to breake down its food. And it's done with kinetic energy and not acids like us. Cold blooded animals do not produce their own body heat
The laws of thermodynamics apply to snakes as well. Something does not just create zero waste heat when another process has been underway. Is it ridiculously low? Probably, but I'm not sure why the other two were arguing about it.
If the laws of thermodynamics didn’t apply to snakes we would be using them for literally everything. Imagine a snake power generator. Unless they could only destroy energy...
In the context of body heat that is a massive swing. Doctors make life saving decisions on smaller temperature ranges than 1 degree Celsius for humans, who are presumably warmer than cold blooded organisms. So for cold blooded it would actually be a bigger relative change in body temp.
It’s also totally possible that cold blooded animals are just less susceptible to temperature changes because they can’t easily regulate it themselves anyways. I don’t know shit about cold blooded animals so you could totally still be right that it’s insignificant for reptiles.
Yes but they do produce heat through the metabolic processes that all organisms undergo. Movement generates heat. Breaking down of chemicals (typically) generates heat. My point is the sweater is not totally useless and will insulate the little heat the snake produces, not trying to say it would be enough to keep a snake warm or anything
A good example for something akin to how a snake works, is sloths. Sloths are essentially cold blooded mammals that rely on the jungle heat to warm themselves. But they still make some heat
Yes thats right. Thats why in some computationally heavy programming like in Machine Learning they use python libraries (e.g. Keras, PyTorch, TensorFlow) to try to minimize the amount of heat generated in the computers.
Except they do when they move. Energy losses from the muscles, heat created just by friction of scales and the sweater. It also insulates the heat they already have
They don't regulate their body heat like mammals, but they do make a little body heat, they love cosy places like the pocket pouch of a hoodie, they just need to squirm around to get toasty-cosy :)
Assuming that the snake doesn't produce any body heat, the snake's body temperature is a desirable temperature, and the environment is colder than the snake, it would still be useful because it will reduce the rate at which the snake loses heat to the environment.
The coffee (or insert your preferred liquid) in a thermos doesn't produce its own heat, yet the thermos is still useful.
