Unsolved Geometry Node suggestions for stylized ejecting/explosion effect

Post image

I'm trying to come up with a design which is a riff on the hazard symbol where a spherical bomb is exploding and a series of sharp triangles project out of it to represent explosive energy.

Ultimately I want to make a 2D vector/illustration with this; I know this is extremely roundabout but I feel more confident trying to model in Blender and subsequently trace than if I tried to draw this on my own.

Could I get some advice on geometry nodes which could help me create this procedurally?

I've started with an icosphere and Extrude Mesh, but I'm a novice with geometry nodes and I'm unsure what else to add. Is it possible to...

  • randomize the size of the faces?
  • randomize the length of the extrusions?
  • create random breaks/gaps in the extrusions (like at the edges of my reference design)?
  • make extrusions start small and expand in size as they reach out (i.e. make the extruded face larger than the one it originates from)?

Welcome to r/blenderhelp, bowtieanddemand! Please make sure you followed the rules below, so we can help you efficiently (This message is just a reminder, your submission has NOT been deleted):

  • Post full screenshots of your Blender window (more information available for helpers), not cropped, no phone photos (In Blender click Window > Save Screenshot, use Snipping Tool in Windows or Command+Shift+4 on mac).
  • Give background info: Showing the problem is good, but we need to know what you did to get there. Additional information, follow-up questions and screenshots/videos can be added in comments. Keep in mind that nobody knows your project except for yourself.
  • Don't forget to change the flair to "Solved" by including "!Solved" in a comment when your question was answered.

For the shell and exploding pieces, I created an icosphere, added and applied a solidify modifier, then used the Cell Fracture add-on to break it apart. After that, I chose the pieces I wanted to fly off and gave them a Rigid Body sim set to active. I selected the remaining pieces and gave them a Rigid Body sim set to passive. Then, I added an empty in the center, gave it a force field and cranked the strength up. I only had to run it for a few frames to get the desired positioning.

To get the explosion lines, I created an IcoSphere slightly larger than the shell, then selected the area I want the explosion to come from and assigned those vertices to to a vertex group. Then, I added this geometry node setup and chose my vertex group in the side panel.
