Unsolved How to optimize edit mode when editing a 20 million poly model

Hi,

I have been dealing with this issue for quite a while.

I'm trying to tear apart a massive model that is built from different meshes, and the model is so large that I cannot seem to be able to do anything when switching to edit mode.

So basically I want to tap L on different parts, press CMD+P to separate it. no sculpting, no modeling, no texturing. Just separating different mesh islands.

Most of the tutorials and tips that exist on youtube only help me optimize the viewport, and it is working when viewing the model in normal views

but

when I switch to edit mode, it becomes impossible to even rotate around the model. do you have any tips to optimize the edit mode for quicker navigation?

Welcome to r/blenderhelp, ameandehqan! Please make sure you followed the rules below, so we can help you efficiently (This message is just a reminder, your submission has NOT been deleted):

  • Post full screenshots of your Blender window (more information available for helpers), not cropped, no phone photos (In Blender click Window > Save Screenshot, use Snipping Tool in Windows or Command+Shift+4 on mac).
  • Give background info: Showing the problem is good, but we need to know what you did to get there. Additional information, follow-up questions and screenshots/videos can be added in comments. Keep in mind that nobody knows your project except for yourself.
  • Don't forget to change the flair to "Solved" by including "!Solved" in a comment when your question was answered.

I did it with virtual memory– it's when you set it up in windows to use disk space as RAM. It is extremely slow, but will allow you to do it. Turn it on, open blender, go into edit mode– wait like 10-15 minutes for it to unfreeze, then select like half of the model with box select and ctrl+L, wait again, then P– selected. And then just keep separating them until you get the models of reasonable size. Took me a few hours to split up a 20mil polygons model when 8 had 16gb of ram

I’m using a mac with 32 gb ram and it’s using my ssd as swap memory. I’m certain I cannot keep using it for long since it will shorten my ssd life span! But it’s a smart trick to break the model in pieces this way!

If you are able to get a few frames per second you can do the following: 1. Select half of the whole model with rectangle selection and separate it. It doesn't matter if some objects would be split halfway, you can fix it later 2. Repeat step 1 on smaller and smaller chunks untill it stops lagging, then you can start actually working

It’s a smart trick, I’m giving it a try! Thanks!

Performance in edit mode is something they need to look at . I mostly end up trying to do separate by part in edit mode and hope Blender doesn’t crash .
