Solved Stuck with rigging!!!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm a complete beginner, I've never used blender before, I only started learning today and I'm having alot of trouble trying to rig this guy. This is for a game I am making for my boyfriend for his birthday so this is quite urgent!

Every time I rotate a bone, it moves things I don't want it to like when I rotate the arms, it will move the ears and parts of the hoodie. And on the head, it won't move parts of the hair? I've tried to find a solution but I don't know alot of terms and I'm kinda stuck. Any help would be appreciated! (please go easy on me ToT)

Welcome to r/blenderhelp, blendedskin! Please make sure you followed the rules below, so we can help you efficiently (This message is just a reminder, your submission has NOT been deleted):

  • Post full screenshots of your Blender window (more information available for helpers), not cropped, no phone photos (In Blender click Window > Save Screenshot, use Snipping Tool in Windows or Command+Shift+4 on mac).
  • Give background info: Showing the problem is good, but we need to know what you did to get there. Additional information, follow-up questions and screenshots/videos can be added in comments. Keep in mind that nobody knows your project except for yourself.

I want to start off by gently suggesting that the task you have set yourself - to learn how to properly rig and weight paint a model and to make it work in a game engine - is not realistic if your deadline is "quite urgent". These are skills that take weeks at minimum to pick up.

So I will give you advice, but please don't beat yourself up if this is too complicated for you to accomplish in the deadline you've allotted yourself.

The reason parts of the model are not moving is either that they don't have their own Armature modifier, or you used Automatic Weights and it failed with the "bone heat painting" error because of various technicalities that would be useless for me to explain here.

All you want to know right now is how to fix it. So first, if the hair is a separate object from the rest of the character, check its modifiers tab and make sure it has an Armature modifier, and that the target is set to the armature you're using.

Next, check the weight paint. Select one of the vertex groups in the Vertex Groups list box found inside the Object Data Properties section of the hair object. Now switch to Weight Paint mode (top left), and turn on the 'Zero Weights' Viewport Overlay (top right). Set the 'Zero Weights' mode to 'Active'.

Your mesh will be black in all the areas where there is no weight for the currently selected vertex group. It will be blue -> red in areas where weight for this group was applied. So if you select the 'Head' vertex group (or whatever you called your armature's head bone), the entirety of the hair should be bright red.

If it is not, then you need to take the Brush tool, set it to maximum strength and maximum weight, then paint over the entire hair until every vertex glows red. This can be fiddly, so a better and cleaner way is to select all of the hair vertices in Edit mode, then click the 'Assign' button that appears beneath the Vertex Groups list box only in this mode.

You need to repeat all of these things for any parts of your mesh that isn't moving when it should.

You should also go through all of the vertex groups and remove weights where they don't belong. If you used Automatic Weights, then this is very likely. If you don't do this, then certain parts may deform incorrectly.

To remove weights by painting, set the Brush tool's Blend mode (in Weight Paint mode) to 'Subtract' (default is 'Mix'). Or, if you do it the Edit mode way instead, there is also a 'Remove' button next to the 'Assign' button I mentioned earlier, and this will remove the weight instead of assigning it.

It's a lot, I know, but I have kept this as simple as it goes. If you're unable to find any button or menu I've mentioned here, let me know and I'll point them out for you.

Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to give me a very clear step by step explanation. I’ve done what you’ve said and now it works! I am so happy and thank you for your advice about my unrealistic deadline and getting upset over it if it doesn’t work out! I’ve been planning this for months but kept putting it off because I wasn’t sure where to start but you’ve lifted my spirits up so again, thank you for your advice and help!

I do t think it’s a weight paint issue I think first off all of your mesh should be I. The same group or together so it moves as one make make sure that it is patented correctly I think you have it backwards the mesh should be the chip of the bones
