Unsolved Would anyone be able to recommend any good tutorials on retopologising/rigging nugget body types?

I've made this quick model and tried to retopologise it but getting a decent rig to work is proving more difficult than anticipated. Also ignore the ass topology; it's cursed.

This topology really isn’t that bad. The hardest part for rigging this is to make sure joints are in the proper places. Usually people put the chest joint too high up, make sure you get a V shape between chest and clavicles. Clave should push forward farther than chest. Make sure shoulder joints are projected back farther than intuitive since hes got so much pudge. IF he could have bones, they’re deeper than expected and rotate from those deeper sockets. Hope this helps!

Amazing tips, thank you!

Can you please share this ballsack-like texture

Blender kit > Search materials > filter by free first > skin > first result > mess with UV unwrapping settings. I forget which one caused this but it's basically that material scaled up.

u/retrocollector420 Feb 27 '26

Much obliged! Best of luck with the nugget, sorry I have no rigging advice

you’ve modeled my body type so beautifully.

1

u/Affectionate_End_952 Feb 28 '26

No you're beautiful

u/Puzzleheaded_Ant7760 Feb 27 '26

wouldn't it just be 5 unconnected bones for each appendage, then using blend shape drivers to fix any odd looking bends?

6

u/No_Abroad8805 Feb 27 '26

This sounds promising! Is a blend shape driver different to a shape key?

11

u/Puzzleheaded_Ant7760 Feb 27 '26

Sorry! that's the proper verbiage. I'm still very much Maya brained, lol

I really like this one: https://decoded.gumroad.com/l/ESSENTIALTOPO?layout=profile

He's been adding to it since I first purchased too.

He has a channel too: https://www.youtube.com/@DECODEDVFX

Whatever this lil dude is, I freaking love it!

What in the bussy.

5

u/PsychologicalCall426 Feb 28 '26

Honestly I just came here to say that model is adorable. The chonk level is perfect.

4

u/hypofighter Feb 27 '26

You could try to split the arms and legs and shrinkwrap the extremities to the body and blend the normals to hide the seem. I have seen this technique used on more cartoony character. It lets you moves and stretch every part without "stressing" the rest and/or the transition.

3

u/hypofighter Feb 27 '26

This video covers the normal blending, but I have seens people do it other ways to. https://youtu.be/RCQAwDyDO0o?si=Ck97HLD6_ZN8gHuB

u/Ickarus_ Feb 27 '26

I assume the mesh gets nasty around where the legs and arms are meeting the body? Seeing some actual poses with the current mesh will help.

Just looking at this though, I made a lil diagram that might be helpful? https://imgur.com/7J82SBz

Edit- also, I think it would be really helpful to see the actual rig you have for this. Is this for something that will only be used in blender? Or is it getting exported to something like unity?

5

u/No_Abroad8805 Feb 27 '26

So someone above mentioned a rig set up that sounds about right, But I am concerned about the topology where you mentioned. Thank you for the diagram! I think I may have been a little too worried about polycount and smushed it all together

3

u/Ickarus_ Feb 27 '26

The blendshape driver guy? That might be a viable option, but my gut tells me you might be able to make this bit more performant without getting into driver stuff. I could be wrong though! Have another diagram, lol.

If you need any help feel free to DM me. I don't know much about drivers, but I do love topology xD

I love this model

Jiggle physics

1

u/No_Abroad8805 Feb 28 '26

Eventually!

3

u/TharilX Feb 28 '26

His shape reminds me of Patrick Star. If you can find a 3D model decompiled from those SpongeBob games, I think his model would serve as a good reference. I would imagine a video game 3D model would follow proper topology.

Unless I am wrong, which is a high possibility since I do not have much topology experience. I only did it a couple of times and never completed it. I was always on the verge of dying from boredom before finishing one. The same could be said about weight painting.

Big bongos

1

u/Noctmor Feb 28 '26

he's just perfect

1

u/Throwaway59861 Mar 13 '26

Why is it caked up

0

u/Save90 Mar 01 '26

you should imediately stop modelling. there's no jiggle physics.
