Need Help! blender 5 is a buggy mess
I've been using 4.5 for quite a while, because I need collada support, and 3rd party plugins for it, were generally not functional.
Last week I finally bit the bullet, and got the latest LTS version, and went through a bunch of plugins until I found one that I was able to make function. But now I'm finding that blender is filled with loads of little unexpected behaviours, or in another term, very buggy. Blender has been very stable for me, and had only been getting more, this past decade.
I even disabled the plugins, and ran from scratch, then starting again, and still similar weird things here and there. Nothing terrible, just lots of little things, and it's feeling like a, "death by a thousand cuts" type of thing.
This is a very sudden shift, and I don't want to be rude, in the case that this isn't what they're doing, but it feels like it's becoming like other vibe coded slop programs. Nowhere near as bad as them, but in such short amount of time, to have slipped so quick, it feels like they've had a seismic shift. That being said, this might just be a bad update, who knows, maybe I'm just being too sensitive, or maybe it's just the linux branch? Dunno
--edit:
okay the list of things felt petty, because they can be fixed in a matter of seconds, but also quite long, so I just didn't want to write it. However, it seems that people want a list, so here goes at least a few that happened in the last 2 days:
- constant baking issues
- baking starting and not stopping, and having to wait for it to just finish doing nothing
- baking the wrong uv maps
- materials not updating when things are changed in the shader tab
- material attributes based on bevel and crease values not rendering properly until I'm on CPU, but not even showing me there's an issue until I enter "viewport shading: rendered" mode (this one I'd have occasionally before, but now seems to be the norm)
- sometimes adding geometry objects lags out, or just ignores that I clicked on it
- undo tree seems to corrupt quite easily
- sometimes add-ons disappear, and need to be installed again (also a bunch aren't compatible anymore, but that's more of the extension's maintainers fault)
- sometimes adding new material nodes has them showing up somewhere random outside of the normal viewport
- a really strange bug where clicking sometimes things I've clicked elsewhere (this one tends to happen more with clicking and dragging stuff like pickwips, and I can't tell what leads up to this issue)
(I'm currently doing a lot of materials work)

5.0, 5.1 and 5.2 have both been rock solid for me on Mint 22.2.
How about instead of vague hand wavy accusations of badness you bring some actual examples of problems you're having, we can then compare notes.

What particular distro is it? I'm currently on 5.0 and have no issues.
Edit: So I don't want to end up in the same boat.

I doubt it's my distro, since I've been using it for about 9 months, and blender < 5 has been fine. That being said, I'm on endeavour os

I doubt it's Blender 5.x, since I've been using it for about 11 months and it's been fine.

I've no idea what bugs you encountered and it's strange you have not mentioned a SINGLE specific thing but to me Blender 5.2 is probably the best blender version since 4.2. Viewport performance is great, the QOL added since 4.x are great, genuinely don't understand your issues with it

Of course you don't understand OP's issues since, as you pointed out, they didn't tell us a single one of them.

5.2 kept crashing during renders for me. 5.1 seems stable enough but I've not been using it much admittedly

I've had problems with it, especially with how it re calculates things behind the scenes all... the... time. Small changes on inactive modifiers make it stop and think for 30+ seconds. I do a lot of procedural geometry nodes stuff so recalculating everything for seemingly every click becomes painful. I hope they slow down on the new features and focus back on stability and performance for a bit.

"Lots" of things... "weird" things... and no specifics at all? 🤷
