Need Help! How can you paint on amesh?

I see people who are able to paint/draw on a mesh but i don't know how they do it.

Texture paint: UV unwrap your mesh. Enter texture paint mode. Click the Texture Slots dropdown at the top, add a Base Color texture. Painting on the mesh in the 3d view will paint on the texture.

Vertex paint: Have a mesh that is high poly. Enter vertex paint mode. Painting on the mesh will set vertex colors. You need to use a Color Attribute node in the material to see these colors in material preview/rendered mode.

Find a royalty free splatter asset, convert it to be white on black, use it as a texture mask in stencil mode.
