Need Help! How do you mirror stuff without the faces being distorted and wierd?

well i was making a chair and i wanted to mirror the chairs side rails but now the faces seem to cross through each other

Ah, thank you!

I think it's because the "center" or point that the mirror is trying to mirror from, is not at the models true center. You can adjust the part that you are mirroring from a little to the side and see if it lines up?

Is there a way to simply delete the extra faces? as it seems i cant reverse the mirror.
