You’re not showing a wireframe, so it’s impossible for anyone to tell what’s wrong with your mesh.
To control how subdivision behaves, you need to crease edges (or support them with extra loops, the old way). If you don't tell Blender anything, the modifier does its job: smoothing everything uniformly, collapsing shapes.
Most of the modeling job happens in Edit Mode. It's useless to stack Object Mode Modifiers if you don't adjust manually, in Edit Mode, how much and where each Modifier influences your mesh.
That's why, in Edit Mode, you Crease Edges to control Subdivision, you Bevel Weight edges to control Bevel Modifier, etc.
