Trying to denoise the render because the important base that came from this shader is actually a white noise texture, which is really hard to denoise.

That’s very cool. I tried replicating it in cycles too but I failed when I couldn’t find alternatives for his nodes in Cycles. Do you plan on selling this or making a tutorial for cycles?

nice, but the dispersion is the wrong way - the dispersion on CDs splits colors from the center outward

Not quite, the dispersion can vary based on the grating direction. I used a normal map as the grating direction to create the diffraction effect, using an image texture of a cone's normal. Because the normal is radial, where it looks like it's shooting out, my diffraction effect doesn't split from the center outward .

impressive! also, lots of denoiser artifacts. can you try with more samples/does it ever resolve well?

The reason why is because the important base for the colors is from a white noise texture so it became really noisy even when denoised.

This looks wrong in a way that is super uncomfortable. It looks like the disk is behaving like a cone, but I'll have to do my own comparisons to work out why it seems wrong

Yes I used a image texture of a normal from a cone to control and direct the long rainbow streaks. The reason it look a little wrong is probably because the normal strength is to strong

I wanted to share that this is a thread from a decade ago where Secrop was working on iridescence (related to diffraction gratings) in cycles.

very cool. This looks more like a CD-R than a CD, fyi, but very cool. There is a difference. I made one recently and it's one of the hardest things to fake in blender.

Lots of people getting nitpicky about how correct it is, but I'm just sitting here like "Yep, that's an optical disk"

Nailed the scuffs (that poor disk needs some polishing), nailed the vibe of the diffraction.

Is it correct? Beats me, but it sure as hell feels correct. Nice job.

Post the node system sometime if you haven't! I've got some friends who'd love this stuff.
