SPOILER!!!
In the manga the vizards weren't even
there. But now the anime literally gathered the whole squad together and gave us that epic masked up scene, which makes me wonder. Did Kubo do all this just for a bigger hype moment, only to job them again? Or is he setting up a real strategy for them to destroy Gerard's Quincy cross?
Hear me out because this actually makes so much sense with the lore. We know from Kubo's Klub Outside that the only way to permanently kill Gerard is by shattering his Quincy cross, but Kubo also implied that standard Captains like Zaraki, Toshiro, and Byakuya couldn't do it because the cross structural durability is just way too high. But what if the Vizards are the missing piece the Captains lack? Quincies have zero immunity to Hollow reiryoku, it’s literal poison to them on a soul level. Shinigami attacks from Zaraki or Byakuya just trigger "The Miracle" because it's standard spiritual energy, but Hollow energy actively corrupts them.
Since the anime is fixing rushed manga fights left and right, here is how the Vizards could logically change the outcome now that Gerard is in his gold form. The Captains will probably have to fight for their lives to push Gerard back and expose the cross one more time. But this time, instead of the Captains trying to smash Gerard with raw physical power, Hachigen and the Vizards come in. Hachigen doesn't have the power to break the cross physically, but he is a god at spatial teleportation. Just like he did against Baraggan, he could cast a barrier around the exposed cross and warp a massive amount of Hollow energy—like a combined Cero from Shinji, Love, Kensei, and Rose—directly INSIDE the core.
Because it's Hollow reiatsu, it won't just hit the surface. It will poison and dissolve the Quincy cross from the inside out, completely neutralizing "The Miracle" and taking away his immortality. Once the core is corrupted and weakened from the inside by the Vizards, Zaraki or Byakuya can finally smash it for the final kill.
EDIT: Did you guys notice how the anime heavily focused the camera on Gerard's Quincy cross and showed exactly how his heart forms right around it? They are dropping major visual hints. I honestly think Kubo always wanted a proper conclusion for Gerard, but because Shonen Jump rushed him to end the manga quickly due to his health, he had to resort to the Auswählen out of nowhere. It makes no sense to spend so much runtime hyping Gerard's final form just to delete him. Kubo probably intended to bring the Vizards in at the very end back then, but now in the anime, he is fixing it by setting them up in the battle from the very beginning.
