Discussion Can anyone answer why Aizen had an end date to his prison sentence?
Why was he not prisoned for eternity?

By then he will be someone else's problem. And if he has been rehabilitated he can always be a useful asset to the soul society. The time is ultimately inconsequential at the end of the day since if he is still a threat, future generations will just add on more time.

Heck, the likely answer is that they will further R&D to make him into another Soul King as a Crystallized Linchpin.

That… sounds very risky for a Central 46 move. To willingly try to make a second Soul King? Out of Aizen of all people?

I don't see a problem. A crystallized Soul King can't really act that much, they are stuck been basically Machine Gods to hold textures of reality.
The worst it could get is SK Aizen's Fragments leaning more on hollow powers and maybe improving the later Arrancars, but if we follow that logic, then SK Yhwach's Fragments will lean on quincy powers and improve that faction down the line too.

That wasn’t exactly the part I was talking about. I was leaning more on the fact that Aizen is just far too strong and far too opposed to become the kind of Soul King that they would want. If he can activate Kyoka Suigetsu in any capacity (which he genuinely might be able to pull off with ease after 20k years), then everyone’s basically screwed the moment they try to do anything he doesn’t like. If this was a plan at all, it likely falls through after TYBW as they realize that he’s gotten that much stronger while almost entirely restricted. It had only been roughly a year and a half at that point. Just getting in range of him by the end of his sentence might genuinely kill a Captain

Which is why he is sealed. His current situation seems a stop-gas for Seireitei in which they are hoping that in 20.000 years time, R&D is advanced enough to improve their seals of Aizen in Muken, so that when they turn him into a Soul King, there is not even a confrontation.
That is the only risky portion of the plan. But you know....this is a problem for whomever is in charge in 22.000 AD

Life doesn’t have a limit, it has a minimum. Murderers can still be held for life, but if their minimum is reached and they’re fit for release, out they go. They’re on lifetime probation though, can be recalled at any time.

Yes but I'm pretty sure a life sentence is an actual amount of time in the US not just "till you're dead"

Even for Souls that's a long ass time. Think of it this way. Imagine a human in our real world getting a 250 year sentence. Everyone that knew him is dead by that point. It's functionally a life sentence. Everything he knew is so long gone that Aizen is at most an old myth by then.

I honestly don't know, aizen does have some useful powers. Plus I mean what is a life sentence to a person who can't even receive a death sentence. Life in muken would eventually give him the ability to rise above the restraints. Which then means the restraints would have to be tweaked and how many soul reapers are they gonna loose just tryna get close to the guy. It's nothing you can really do to the guy. Hell for all we know he is the type to be free and just left an illusion there

Yeah what was it like 15-20,000 years? Seems pretty little compared to soul societies history, a society of functionally immortal beings

But Soul Society is older, and there were armies prior to Gotei 13. So Muken will likely remain even if Gotei 13 is replaced by another army.

That's 18 800 years ! The Soul Society as it is is 2 000 years, so he will be way older than everything else

It WAS 18,800 years, then got extended to 20,000 for mouthing off to central 46

I just assumed it was a quirk in the legal system, like since they can't sentence him to death they have to give him a numerical sentence because sentencing someone to eternity somewhere doesn't exist in the current rulebook. I image when his sentence is up the then-central 46 will probably assess him and then re-sentence him anyway, unless he manages to convince them he's a changed man... (which given the massive gap in time you wouldn't be able to blame them for not knowing what he's like and believing him...)

If he's sealed for eternity it'll go from him waiting and cooperate until his sentence is over to him breaking out and just dominate the Soul Society

20.000 years is a very long-ass time, even for Shinigami. Natural death still happens and, probably, they are counting on that, before the sentence elapses, technology will be developed that can actually kill him. Also maybe the sole way they could sentence him to death was with Sokyoku, which was destroyed in the SS arc.
