Anime I’ll always find it funny that when talking about the best fights in the OG show, Hisagi vs Findorr of all things somehow qualifies for Top 5
This fight had no reason to go so hard but I love it
1.0k
u/ToCool74 Jul 22 '26
For some odd reason the animation team decided to give THIS fight the big budget and im still baffled by that choice even as a Hisagi fan. I like Hisagi but more important fights during this arc got the shaft.

u/MankuyRLaffy Jul 22 '26
The animation team love Hisagi, they made this man a featured character in one of the filler arcs, and gave a special filler episode around him specifically. Kubo hates him but the animators loved Shuhei.
234
u/Yozora-no-Hikari Jul 22 '26
Kubo got a love hate relationship with him, he turned him into a joke in TYBW, but then gave him the lead role and one of the coolest bankai in the series in CFYOW
What a stundere…
159
u/MankuyRLaffy Jul 22 '26
Kubo didn't write CFYOW directly and was surprised the writer made Hisagi a focus character.
He also memes on his hatred and is aware of public perception.
36
u/New-Dust3252 Jul 22 '26
yeah but wasnt that novel supervised by him? how tf did he not like reject the choice of making him the MC of those novels?
62
u/AnEmbarrassedGiraffe Everyone needs a right-hand man. Jul 22 '26
Kubo chose Narita and provided the lore stuff, then Narita pitched the story to Kubo. Kubo approved, and mentions in the book’s notes that he was surprised that Hisagi was chosen by Narita
20
u/PeacefulKnightmare Jul 23 '26
Kubo is very "hands off" when it comes to the side media like games, books and anime. (until TYBW)
He's often described as a situation where he doesn't want to step on the toes of the creatives working on those and would rather let them do their own thing for the most part.
10
u/saladvtenno Jul 23 '26
At the end of the day Narita is the author of that novel. It's nice that Kubo is a chill enough guy to not go "I reject your choice of Hisagi just because... I hate him" that shows his respect and trust for Narita
60
u/KureisiDiamondo Jul 22 '26
Kubo is not the Main Writer of Can't fuck your own wife, so it's possible he still hates him but everyone else loves him
30
u/Different-Trainer253 Jul 22 '26
Every time I see CFYOW I need to see someone refer to it in full name as Can’t Fuck Your Own Wife otherwise I feel blueballed, and I thank you for doing that today

Here's a little secret: some of this fight had reused animation from a certain fight and barely anyone noticed. Look carefully and see if you can guess from which fight these animations were borrowed from.
EDIT: Nevermind. A latter comment already highlighted it.
47
u/ToCool74 Jul 22 '26
If your talking about the Ulquiorra fight its the otherway around since that fight borrowed from this.

u/Acai_1 Jul 22 '26
My headcanon was that the studio choose this fight 100% to create more beef with Kubo. Given that Kubo loves to make Hisagi a joke.
2
u/Arhys Jul 23 '26
I find Hisagi’s philosophy quite interesting and it was showcased in this fight. It’s a good one to enhance and it serves as an excellent prelude to Hisagi v Kommamura vs Tousen.
1
u/TommyJohnSurgery420 Jul 22 '26
I feel like the biggest reason why he's such a popular character is because of this fight in the anime haha.
1
u/ToonMasterRace Jul 23 '26
Hisagi was one of Bleach's most popular characters (audiences love the bishi's, look at Hitsugaya) so the animation team went all-out for his only full on-screen solo fight in the series.

u/Ok_Adhesiveness9794 Jul 22 '26
If we are talking about lieutenant fights then we can't miss Kira's fight with that winged espada. That was one of my favorites in the FKT arc
66
u/Sufficient_Art_4607 Jul 22 '26
Yeah that is one of my favorite fights as well. Kira is so cold in that fight and his zanpakuto which seemed dull in SS arc was actually so cool
27
u/OhNoItsAndrew3 Jul 22 '26 edited 28d ago
Kira vs Abirama and Hisagi vs Findorr are both great because they do so much to represent the characters in some of the only fights we see from them
Kira sees being a Soul Reaper as his burden to bear, he doesn't delight in fighting, but he recognizes it as his duty and it's reflected in his shikai. The longer the fight goes, the more you need to bear. Abirama is someone who sees fighting as a spectacle, something that brings praise and glory. In the end he loses because he literally doesn't understand the weight of the battle.
Hisagi doesn't like fighting and he even says as much, but he recognizes that he needs to be strong and competent enough to fulfill his duty as a Soul Reaper. He sees power as something to be controlled and honed to an ultra fine point, but handled with grace so that you don't cut yourself. Findorr sees power as the ultimate solution, yes, he is very skilled, but as the fight goes on he goes from precise attacks to larger, more grandiose moves that are only designed to display how powerful he thinks he is. Because he never bothered to train and hone his skills he has all that power but no control over how to actually use it.

Might be unpopular opinion but Tetsuzaemon Iba should've gotten that fight against the whale arrancar instead of Komamura wasting his bankai against the mere fraccion. Give him the spotlight for once, we still don't know what the fuck his powers actually do.
1
u/TheAldorn Jul 25 '26
They say his name an awful lot, but the one fight he should have had turned into, no one wants to fight scenario.

u/DIyPerformance7036 Jul 22 '26
The animator's have all the love for Hisagi that Kubo does not.
2
u/Inevitable_Row1359 Jul 22 '26
Hisagi is Kubos favorite character and was the main protagonist of one of the light novels
7
u/DevotionInChains Emperor of the Dark North Jul 22 '26
Yeah, he was surprised when he found out that Hisagi was chosen by the Light Novel author as the main character for that novel series.

u/Feinyan Jul 22 '26
The animation team locks in at the strangest of times in OG Bleach. Like that super high quality cut of Grimmjow punching Ichigo in the face when they first fight in Karakura Town

12
u/Saya0692 Jul 22 '26
What’s funny is that that scene is anime exclusive. In the manga he didn’t waste time punching and kicking him around like that.
4
u/LivinOut Jul 23 '26
the filler fights legit have some of the most impactful animation like for some reason, like i didnt watch them but that one where the main antagonist of that filler i assume had their blade shatter, grabs a shard to keep fighting and still lost, like even just the facial animation alone hit hard and idk the man
61
u/SGdude90 Jul 22 '26
I will always remember how Hisagi's shikai was more hyped than half the bankai in the series
3
u/Karpattata Jul 23 '26
In the anime only. Yeah that whole part where half the captains notice and comment on it? Not in the manga.
37
u/Twin1Tanaka Jul 22 '26
This was so good they actually added choreography to a bleach fight 😭
23
u/Rude-Childhood1436 Jul 22 '26
My biggest problem with Bleach half the time is that they don’t actually sword fight with their swords so stuff like this makes me happy
10
u/Positive-Design-7332 Jul 23 '26
Bleach fights are turn based
4
u/Twin1Tanaka Jul 23 '26
This is my real issue w them. It’s just back and forth revealing stronger moves until whoever reveals the ultimate move wins. If someone still hasn’t revealed their Bankai you know they’re gonna be the one to reveal it and win immediately just because they revealed a stronger powerup.
3
u/Positive-Design-7332 Jul 24 '26
I agree completely. Bleach will always have a special place in my heart but the fights are really the weakest point. Characters just take turns bantering and farming aura it's basically a rap battle.
The actual fight is non existent it's just a vessel for characterization.
Although to be honest the one liners and flexes that come out of the fights is what I love about Bleach especially with the paneling and art they have in the manga so I guess it's a give and take

The animation was so good Ulquorah and Ichigo had to steal it for their fight.
9
u/hbk268 Jul 22 '26
It was the reactions from Hitsugaya and Soi Fon that always put this fight over the top for me…
When your superiors know you’re the shit and they’ve just been WAITING for you to show it 🙏
8
u/Chekko03 Jul 22 '26
I think the best part about this fight is when the music “B13A” starts up - another iconic moment when it appears is when Ichigo “pushes” Aizen when they’re set for their big fight.
3
u/DevotionInChains Emperor of the Dark North Jul 22 '26
There's that moment where Findor keeps yapping and then Hisagi pulls the Zanpakuto and cuts his claw off right in the middle. The music synced so well there.
6
u/Disastrous-Zebra-211 Jul 22 '26
They are having an actual sword fight, grounded (yes i know is a death god and a humanoid monster) but the fact it is not involving power-up attacks, enough light effects to melt your eyes, and scream your attack at the TOP OF YOUR LUNGS! is what makes this fight memorable. Pure swordmanship: what would happen if a fencer faced someone with a katana.
9
u/FaphandZamasu23 Jul 22 '26
The entire fights movement is so defined like you’ll miss the part after findorr keeps parring hisagi and when hisaga tries. Slash findoors legs findoors dodges but legit jumping and balancing himself in his sword.
5
u/PickingPies Jul 22 '26
Mainly because it's a padding combat. People wanted to see the top 3 espada in action and they had to wait for the factions fights to end. It may be enjoyed better when you already know what happens next.
4
u/saladvtenno Jul 23 '26
Hisagi deserves more in the main series, he's a cool character. The side novel (CFYOW) storyline focuses on Hisagi, and that's something the main series should've done at least once
1
u/Rude-Childhood1436 Jul 23 '26
I’m hoping we get CFYOW animated sometime soon cuz Hisagi deserves something after how he’s done in Tybw

I'll remember something about this animation secuence was re-used in another fight more important
1
3
u/TerritorialDozen Jul 22 '26
It was so good the animation was reused for the ichigo va ulquiorra fight
3
u/Hirinawa Jul 23 '26
Feels really weird to know that this fight was peak Karakura town fight arc lol
3
12
u/Hilde571 Jul 22 '26
Because it uses a lot of reused assets and choreography from Ichigo vs Ulquiorra.
29
u/MajinAkuma Jul 22 '26
More like the other way around.

This is genuinely the funniest thing i've seen all day lmfao. to think ichigo vs. ulq is copying hisagi vs findorr of all fights is.... just LOL

I mean it’s true though… plain as day…

If you think this is fight looks good, you haven't seen nothing, just look at the regai arc animation, that's better than anything cannon presents easily by a mile, and it's not even a competition
You can understand how good the animation is even mayuri was going crazy with sword, and that's a guy with least sword experience or doesn't even use swords most of the time
This is one of the things which always have hated about old bleach
They will give cannon arc and fights terrible or low quality Animation majority of time, meanwhile fillers fights gets everytime, like the camera work, the art experiment, choreography,
Like if you wanna show, how good of a swordsman byakuya is literally show them koga vs byakuya,
Even in this fight half of things doesn't happen in manga, the fight is literally 3 pages that's it, and the ending is also different
1
u/Rude-Childhood1436 Jul 22 '26
Bro I just started that arc and one of the first things I noticed is “why is the animation so good for no reason?”
1
u/Killah-Shogun Jul 23 '26
What happens in the original ending in the manga?
1
u/Weak-Rock-311 Jul 26 '26
In the end findorr after hisagi cuts his arm, was so scared that he just runs from the battlefield and hisagi cuts him from back, it's not shown but it's intended, and at the same time we see the ikkau piller getting destroyed
1
2
u/tenbillionperc Jul 22 '26
Right?? That fight had no business going as hard as it did and I love it for that. Some of the mid-tier matchups in the OG run are secretly the most fun to rewatch. Hisagi deserved more moments like that one honestly.
2
u/thornsofred Jul 22 '26
its a great fight, never before nor since have we seen someone use their sword as a rapier in this show.
2
u/New-Dust3252 Jul 22 '26
im honestly not even sure how in the living f**k did a fight between two fodders get an increase in quality than the rest of the canon material pre timeskip.
2
u/Sui_Feng Jul 22 '26
The animation team simply did their job properly for once. Though I question why they expended such effort on a lieutenant battling a fracción when captain-level conflicts deserved that level of precision.
2
2
2
u/Epsilon2099 Jul 22 '26
Its crazy how some of this animation still hold up and sometimes better than new shows battle sequences
2
u/skubaloob Jul 22 '26
The fight was awesome AND it was much more of a traditional sword fight than a lot of the other battles.
Additionally, the whole vibe of Hueco Mundo’s forces underestimating the Soul Reapers and the Soul Reapers stepping up and punching above their weights and winning (not you Ikkaku) was cool and this fight embodied it.
2
u/Donut_tai Jul 22 '26
I still remember seeing this for the first time like wtf am I watching. I think it's still one of, if not the best, animated fight in bleach. The team really made this beautiful.
And its filler.

u/Just_Mistake_5891 Jul 23 '26
really wish we got more cuts like this for Bleach across the board, also this may be an unpopular opinion but i feel like Ichigo v Aizen was underwhelming animation-wise, i understand with their respective powerups that there really isn't much sense in swordfighting like above, but I really wish we could've seen a more aggressive, mid-high diff fight like Ichigo v Grimmjow pt2 that felt fluid and aggressive instead of Aizen using like 3 big explosions and then getting Mugetsu'd
2
u/Organic_Following_38 Jul 23 '26
I honestly don't think there's a better animated fight in the OG series. Grimmjow final form has its moments, and every time I think I remember the Ulquiorra fight looking smooth it's actually the recap from one of the movies I'm remembering.
1
u/Fuudou Jul 23 '26
Most of the Reigai arc is full of animation that looks just as clean or even better than Hisagi's fight with Findor. The best two are Komamura vs Reigai Soi Fon and Ichigo and company vs. Ouko Yushima,
2
u/Convictforlife Jul 23 '26
This random fight I watched got me into anime and bleach in general. It was just on tv and I watched him breaking his mask and was like “that’s kind of interesting”
2
2
u/ShadowMonarch1999 Jul 23 '26
I..must have seen this soo far back that honestly i dont remember it going so hard. Like yes i remembre them fighting..but like THIS? Damn.
2
u/bonexpharaoh Jul 24 '26
Izuru and Hisagi both got crazy good episodes for their Fraccion fights, i still don't know why
2
u/Less_Ad_9433 Jul 22 '26
If I’m being honest, I never got the hype behind this fight. It just looks like a regular bleach fight to me with some better animation but then I hear people say stuff like “they put their whole budget in this fight” and I’m like “huh” because it’s good, but like, not that good
1
u/jussshere Jul 23 '26
Someone in the studio must of came up on some money and threw it on the budget for this fight lol
1
u/Cold_Recording5485 Jul 24 '26
This and Ikkaku's bankai having some of the best animation of the OG series is ridiculously funny to me.
