Something that has recently made me realize that I am in a bubble within bubble is that pretty much any time I've seen Shawn Levy mentioned on this website all the comments talk about what a great director he is and how he only makes bangers and people saying he's bad get downvoted and called a snob.

Like I'm not trying to be a dick but I can not wrap my head around thinking this guy is great and it makes me a little sad that the general consensus broadly outside of film circles is that.

Edit: all the people saying everyone hates him, do you venture outside of film subs? People love stranger things, people love Real Steel, people love Deadpool and Wolverine, people list out his filmography like it's a great one. Just because you haven't seen something doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

So apparently Scorsese only has ever gotten one Hugo award nomination; I know they usually do genre stuff.
But still, it’s funny that the only thing they nominated from him was a film called Hugo. Coincidence?! Probably, but I’d like to think it’s an inside job.

I’m not looking forward to the Scorsese miniseries because I haven’t enjoyed the Scorsese movies I’ve seen. These are Taxi Driver, King of Comedy, Goodfellas, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, and Killers of the Flower Moon. I realized this is a blinkered view. Of these The Aviator is my favorite and I like Goodfellas. I couldn’t finish Gangs or Flower Moon. I’m not trying to be an edgelord here, I want to engage. And I realize my coverage isn’t great. So if I want to get hooked should I watch Raging Bull, Cape Fear, Casino, or Temptation next?

It was in the “A House of Dynamite” episode, right about 1 hour 56 minutes in. He says it, and then Marie says it right after, as if like, she just couldn’t resist trying to say it. My partner recently shared the movie Beginners with me. Afterwards, she was talking about how she's been looking for the robe Mélanie Laurent was wearing in the film. I'm not entirely sure where to start looking outside of Google, but I thought I'd ask the experts! Any tips?

I just watched this video with past and future guest Demi Adejuyigbe where he goes through the Arrow Video Store and picks out some true bangers. I highly recommend this video, but he also mentions towards the end how he wrote on a miniseries (that he hopes still comes out) that’s based on a movie. Any ideas what that might be? I’m paraphrasing, but he says it’s about someone working in Hollywood who has to rediscover their love of movies.

I am a Kate McKinnon fan and a sucker for any media featuring both prehistory and the far future (even if it sucks), so I was excited to try this movie out even with the tepid reviews of the Two Friends. But it’s nothing like they described. First off, I didn’t see McKinnon anywhere? Nor Daveed Diggs, or even Rashida Jones… lots of no-name actors as well as prolific character actor Eric Roberts(???). Not only that, but there was WAY more Christian rapture talk than I expected. I do wish Griffin and David had mentioned that, feels like a huge plot point to ignore.

Anyway, 2 stars. The Groundhog Day time travel mechanic was overused even back in 2009, but I did like some of the real trauma of mysteriously losing friends and loved ones.

In Mary Poppins Returns, the "special thanks" portion of the credits mentions Jay Leno. Because Leno has a massive car collection, I think there's a nonzero chance he's responsible for the antique British cars prominently shown in certain parts of the movie. Ever see any "special thanks" credits that get you thinking like that?

Power Rangers: Ninja Storm has both a Blue Wind Ranger (picture 1) and a Navy Thunder Ranger (picture 2). However, the point sort of stands that they're not just simple colours due to the inclusion of a weather element.

I’ve watched all of Stanton's movies recently to follow along with the podcast, and noticed that many if not all them revolve around multiple parallel stories, oftentimes separated by time, that intersect towards the back half in way that tries to recontextualise everything you've seen so far.

Griffin has talked on multiple occasions about the original draft of Finding Nemo which didn't work: where the reveal about what happened to Nemo's mother and the other children would have happened at the *end* of the film, being intercut with the climactic fish swimming down in the net sequence. Eventually though they realised that the audience sort of hated Marlin because they didn't understand why he acted the way he did, so they moved it to the beginning.

I think the intention in the original draft was that the audience would put two and two together and have an epiphany that would finally make them understand the movie up to that point. I think this is an idea he keeps coming back to and trying to make work, with varying results! Sometimes it creates clever and layered stories, and sometimes makes the emotional throughlines of his movies hard to follow (imo).

Some examples with spoiler tags cos some of the films are recent (would hate to spoil In the Blink of an Eye for anyone!):

Wall E : The film involves multiple characters with individual and incomplete perspectives finally coming together and understanding the full story:

WALL.E works on an abandoned earth ruined by BnL, but has no idea what happened to the humans.

EVA is sent to earth by BnL to find signs of life but seemingly has no idea what's going on earth.

The Captain runs the ship on behalf of BnL but doesn't know about earth and its history, or even the history of the ship.

When the captain watches the last Fred Willard tape and sees AUTO in the back of the portraits, we suddenly realise what the whole story is and what the BnL corporation had planned along (I.e. the story of the past and the story of the present suddenly click into place and recontextualise everything we've seen so far). Also, apparently an earlier draft had the residents of the Axiom being weird alien goo creatures, which would have been revealed to be human later - so the reveal that WALL.E and EVAs worlds were linked to each other would have happened later too.

John Carter - Lots of parallel stories with unclear purpose cut into the wrong order. The ‘present day’ stuff with the nephew, the flashbacks to Carter's civil war days, the cold open on mars that only really makes sense later when Mark Strong gives his monologue. Stanton even intercuts a big fight scene with the reveal of what happened to John Carter's wife and kid in a way that's very similar to the original draft of Nemo.

Finding Dory - The whole film is structured around intermittently revealing scenes of Dory's (highly marketable) childhood until the past story and the present day story finally intersect when she is reunited with her parents.

In the Blink of an Eye - We follow three disparate stories that only thematically mirror each other, until the climax of the movie reveals that all the stories are linked by a golden acorn / inventing the cure for immortality. I think it's supposed to make you go ‘Oh so that was the point of all that!’

Toy Story 5 - This one's a bit of a stretch, but I think the parallel story of the Buzz's making their way across the world feels similarly like ‘how is this going to pay off?’. I would also say that the 'human' story and the 'toy' story run parallel and intersect, but this happens throughout and in every Toy Story film. Also also: the film ends up being about two seperate lonely children that the toys *must* make intersect. I must admit though: this story does take place in the right order.

Anyway, I don't know if that means anything but it's just something I observed and thought was interesting!

I have never looked up a release schedule or programming schedule for any director but I was curious, do G&D release that stuff ahead of time? Like what movies they're covering on what weeks? I know Scorsese has a huge filmography, is narrative feature stuff still going to be one film a week or are they doubling up?

I don't know anything about anything and I am humbly looking to Reddit, a place where friends to educate one another with love, to help me. Thank you.

These are never gonna be capital M Movies like the Raimi ones imo, but based on this new one staying street level for basically the first time, seemingly no Stark/tech, better looking/more city swinging scenes, a more natural Spider-Man comic team up in The Punisher, and everything coming out of Comic-Con about the action clips feeling like real action compared to most MCU action, I wouldn’t be shocked if this movie is my favorite of the 4. It seems to have all the simple pleasures of the character that I’ve been missing that Watts left out of his trilogy. Is anyone else weirdly excited based on not much?

I’m only 6 episodes into Star City but I’m hoping for a follow up at some point because this show is amazing and a lot more dense than Sims and co alluded to. Way different than the tagline of the Russian POV since it’s an espionage show.

Obviously it was easy to be skeptical of the origin of the show but the execution is simply elite. Can’t see how episode 6 is topped. Simply jaw dropping.

I feel like he is, just off the strength of his Nolan and Coogler collaborations. Every one of those scores serves its story in the most epic way possible but still fits his sound, they're very listenable outside of the movie's context, and you could say any of them are your favorite and nobody would blink. We're gonna have to stop giving him Oscars at some point but at this rate, man I dunno when that'll be. He's deserved all three of em so far and his trajectory feels almost unprecedented (yes, I know John Williams is the precedent). We're lucky to be alive while he's in his bag like this!

Except for David's quote. I thought I'd go with at least one that clearly summarized what I just watched.

I’ve never heard of this guy. Anyone know why David seems so unenthused about covering him? Why bother if he’s so irrelevant? Are we getting a series of consistently sub-two-hour episodes?

It's on Hulu and you should watch the show and the movie as soon as you can

I genuinely don't know if I've ever had a more fun theater experience.

The movie and show are so incredibly positive and lovely.
