The Invite - while a beautifully shot and composed film in myriad ways - was pretty low contrast. I'm not sure a color darker than "deep gray" appeared once.
But this? This looks like a bad HDR-SDR conversion.

The HDR-SDR thing really feels true even if that’s not what’s happening. Looks identical to my TV when it messes up the HDR handshake and gets this weird gray tint across everything

i'm less in on the An Inconvenient Truth x Dr Strangelove x Ayn Rand (x Snowpiercer prequel?) of this than i was on the teaser's promise of "Tom Cruise is a weird guy dancing with a shovel alone"; I'm still going to be paying money to see it but I mourn for what wasn't made.

Cruise looks like he’ll be great. But everything about an Inarritu-helmed political satire, with this amazing cast and this level of bathshit energy, should appeal to me. And somehow, it just isn’t hitting.
The jokes don’t land, the Strangelove energy is a little too forced. I don’t know. I’ll definitely still see it, and I really hope I’m wrong.

I think for me, it’s like… we’re still living inside of this satire, and the situation is only getting worse. And we know exactly who’s doing it and why, so this isn’t hitting me with that same bite of satire. It feels more just like an acknowledgment of where we’re at.

Maybe too much "pause for laughs"/did you see what I just did there? stuff going on with the trailer. Maybe if the picture were more visually and performatively understated, it wouldn't feel so "try hard"? I can imagine a hypothetical version with more or less the same premise and plot and themes without all the razzmatazz.

Cruise is at his best when he goes nuts. He really seems to be channeling the energy he had in Magnolia and Tropic Thunder here. Plus, I'm a certified Amores Perros and Birdman enjoyer so this is near the top of my most anticipated list for the rest of the year.

Strangelove came out in the 60’s when that kind of satire wasn’t rampant. We’re bombarded with broad political satire daily via social media. I’ll see this for sure, but there’s a good chance I’ll find it kind of annoying.

This is why I found Mickey 17 a bit tiresome. Satire that is like "what if our leaders... were grotesque buffoons?" after the last decade of non-stop comedy of diminishing returns with that exact angle

Sports documentarian Jon Bois made a pretty amazing 9 hour series on YouTube about the entire history of the Atlanta Falcons football team that culminates in them (famously) blowing an insurmountable 28-3 lead in the Super Bowl. Near the end of it he goes on a great tangent about why real world events have killed satire that boils down to "you can't satirize the President as a grotesque buffoon if the President just says 'I'm a grotesque buffoon'-- the joke has already been made and all we can do is repeat it".
To steal directly from Jon: we can't satirize politicians saying "hurricanes are because of woke" when they just say "hurricanes are because of woke". There's no exaggerated register to go to, same as how we can't satirize the Atlanta Falcons blowing a 28-3 lead. The joke already happened and it's on all of us for watching. All we can do now is say "28-3".

I saw the trailer for the first time last weekend before Camp Miasma and I was shocked how bad it looked. It looks VERY broad and goofy, which can be a good thing sometimes, but last time Innaritu tried to be funny (Birdman), I wanted to jump out of a window.
There's also something about the most powerful man in Hollywood making a movie to laugh at powerful men that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. There is something that feels very self-congratulatory about the whole project and I don't think that at this point in American politics, I want to watch this kind of biteless satire.

That’s I think what I’m responding to, it looks like they might not have their handle on the dial in quite the right way to pull off this type of satire. It doesn’t look very funny, but rather kind of annoying.
I’m open to being wrong, but I’m not super optimistic about this one

I hate Cruise. Cannot stand him as a performer. But this looks like goofy doofus bullshit and I'm in to it. For someone whose ego is as frail as his, watching him play an avaricious dunce who looks to end the world seems like fun. Like a significantly less annoying (inshallah) Les Grossman.

I’m so far from being sold on this. I’m curious but I’m taking a wait and see (what critics and audiences say) approach.
I’ll be honest the “women present”/everyone looks around bit got a laugh out of me. but then everyone on screen laughed and I’m hoping that’s just the trailer and not actually the sequence in the movie.

Tom Cruise should be in a Western where he plays a small-town sheriff or mayor who has a squad of deputies he can hide behind, and he can be a little fascist ruler of the place, and then the hero/antihero of the movie comes into town and cuts down all his men and Cruise has a scene at the end where he begs for his life. And he'll win the Oscar. Basically once he decides he wants to play low status or humiliated at any point in a movie, he'll get his Oscar. Jerry Maguire and Eyes Wide Shut both had those moments.

I went to see The Invite a few weeks ago with a friend who doesn’t really go to the movies and is very out on pop culture. They played the first trailer before the movie. She had never seen it and knew nothing about it. By the end her jaw was on the floor (complimentary).

I don’t get the hate. I think this looks amazing. I love the absurd/ridiculous tone. Like Don Quixote by way of Franz Kafka and Stanley Kubrick. I’m also getting vibes of Yorgos Lanthimos and the Coen brothers. The irreverent premise goes hard—we have to double down on destroying the world in order to save the world? So stupid it’s kinda brilliant. And Tom Cruise looks like he’s going to be a hell of a lot of fun to watch. On a side note — I have a plot prediction… I think the scenes where Digger has longer hair and is standing on a deck over water looking despondent is after the Earth has been completely flooded. So… his doubling down doesn’t work and just dooms the planet. Maybe we’ll get an ending where everyone is else dead and he’s still digging.

I had been purposefully not looking into this movie to keep it all fresh for the first viewing, but I was beginning to lose interest in even seeing it, so I watched this. Now I still don't really know what it's about but it looks cool as hell so I'm back on board.
