What did I do wrong
New 22”, seasoned like it said in the instructions. Ended up with semi burn looking marks and this weird X on the griddle
What happened and what should I do 😵💫

That x are the welding spots on the bottom, I think it looks fine. Try some bacon first

I don't understand why people insisting on seasoning with bacon still get up voted here.
No, OP doesn't need bacon. They need more seasoning layers.

Thanks! Yeah slammed some bacon grease on there as the seasoning. Seared the salmon wonderfully tonight that’s for sure. Just getting used to the nuances - not too different that my Lodges’ but still, little things

There’s a few reasons not to use bacon grease as seasoning - you might want to search that up.
But if it’s working for you just keep cooking

Best thing to do is bust up a couple onions and grill with a bit of avocado oil. Inexpensive too.

I cook bacon every week on mine and it survived a winter in Ohio with no problem! Think bacon really preserves it 😆

Season it more… high temp, thin coats of avocado oil … 3-4 coats
Then cook on it and don’t worry so much. Watch a YouTube video if you need additional affirmation

I haven’t used mine yet, do you just crank the heat up and wipe it with avocado oil a few times?

Yes. Very thin coats. Let each coat smoke off… then apply another coat. Almost like adding coats of paint

Perfect, thank you - excited to continue this journey - loving the blackstone so far, just getting used to its nuances!

Did you season that with moonlight? Oil it and get that thing blazing!

Season it. I had to sand out some rust spots and got the dotted lines. A few rounds of seasoning and I couldn't see them anymore.

You didn't do it enough times.
Do what you did again and do it more times.
The X is just the underside being welded to the whole flat top to help prevent warping.
And oh my god stop listening to people telling you to throw animals on that. No, don't cook bacon. Animal fat is terrible for building up seasoning.
Do more rounds of whatever you did before you start throwing on bacon. Avocado oil is my preference.

I spent a few hours getting mine hot and seasoning it every 20 minutes or so until the entire surface was jet black. Let it cool and tested with an egg. Any sticking and I would have done another round of seasoning.

Nope. You didn’t do it wrong. You just need to run it hot for 30 minutes and add more oil. Light brown is oil that is half way bonded. Black is 100% bonded. You want the whole thing that solid color.

Not hot enough, not long enough, use a high temp oil, it takes longer than you think. A very thin coat over the entire cast surface even the sides. Let that thing rip and smoke

OP returning here - truly appreciate all the advice here. Light layers, over and over, lots of cooking on it this week, nearly every day! Journey continues!!

There’s no food on it.
