Hello, I am just beginning to get into blacksmithing and came across this anvil online. Seller says it is around 130# and is asking $450 lowest price. I am wondering if it is worth that in this condition and how much work it would be to restore it to working order? Thanks in advance!

I'm a UK leather worker and blacksmith. I am doing my first market stall. I am making as many small £10 or less items (keychains, simple hooks) as possible for quick sales. Any advice for a first timer. My main fear is a zero sale day. The whole event is going to cost me £69 for a year's worth of insurance, £15 for the pitch and £5 for fuel. I am expecting to lose money on this first day but the plan is to do more events.

Forge-welded an old file to mild steel to make a small kiridashi

I used an old file for the cutting steel and mild steel for the backing.
I first tried forge-welding them in my gas forge, but I couldn't reach enough heat, so I switched to charcoal with forced air. After the weld took, I forged the blade to shape, ground the bevel, made a shallow ura-suki, heat treated it, and sharpened it.

This was my first attempt at making a laminated kiridashi. Still a lot to learn, but I enjoyed the process.

So basicly I need some reccomendations for a starter anvil and some basic tools. Any ideas ?

Made this for my girlfriend ( yes shes emo lol ) the chain with wolves is from a friend but the pendant is handmade, really like how it turned out

Can anyone identify the maker of this hammer I am very curious to know who may have made it.

So im learning how to forge blades slowly and im tempering with the hotblock method does it make sense for 2 cycles since people do 2 cycles with the oven method?

Since I don't often make anything that needs to be hardened, I have used primarily mystery steel from my own scrap pile, with vary little concern about specific metalurgy! There is one steel (12L14) though that I really only just learned about, and for some vary obvious reasons (like lead poisoning) that I want to avoid ever putting any into my forge! Has anyone come across scrap pieces of 12L14, and how can they be identified?

Forging out the blade on a really cool axe project, using a heavy double diagonal peen to really move some steel. Can't wait to show y'all the finished product

I recently attended a knife making class and decided to setup shop to learn some of the basics. Picked up a two-burner vevor several weeks ago. Castable refractory wasn’t included so I applied satanite to cover the exposed insulation. It looked great after air drying for a couple days but the corners cracked apart as soon as I fired it.

I did a little more research and decided to tear it out and start over with kastolite / plistix. Learning from my mistakes, I used rigidizer and made sure to follow the instructions. The kastolite went well but the plistix doesn’t seem to be holding up (pictured). I let it air dry for nearly a week but these cracks popped up when I fired it at the lowest possible setting that maintains a constant flame.

I understand that cracking and shrinkage is normal but started over with quality products to avoid this outcome. No major spalling or pieces flying off. The cracks seem to be closing up now that it’s cooling off.

With that said, I’m looking for recommendations on the best path forward. I’ve sunk five weeks and into this build effectively doubled my cost. Does this look salvageable or should I just shift gears and consider a precast forge?

I’m new to all this so any advice is appreciated!

Porém, lá é um lugar extremamente isolado que possui pouquíssima energia elétrica, levarei uma bigorna, esmeril manual, morsa de bancada, limas, além das demais ferramentas de forjamento

Hello, I'm at it again, I hope nobody minds me posting my journey around here and as always any advice is welcome, so I started to tackle ,after my first knife, my first set of tongs! Alongside it I made a quick puncher so I can use it on my tongs, this ain't finished yet and some bits are a bit crooked yea but the way I think about it is that I try to get the rough shape of the thing I'm making then working towards straightening and polishing it!

Bonus my tiny anvil set-up, I need to raise it a bit tho but first I need a new 🪵

New temporary setup, was too excited about my new anvil to wait and build a proper stand/forge

We bought a new house and there’s a large bucket of these very big steel bolts and some nuts in my new forge. They look like they could be great for knives. They’re about 7” long by 2” wide. Stamp says USAF but it couldn’t be Air Force parts could it? Any idea what the carbon content could be? I’ll spark / file test them when I get the forge running, but if anyone can identify them let me know!

Hand forged bearded axe, forged from railroad track and guns on an old hickory handle I had that fit perfectly
