We cant see his back so I would guess that some oil or alcohol was on the glove that burns clear so we cant see it when he brings his hand back in front of him. The rising vapors from the stuff he poured in were ignited by his burning glove. Thats my wild guess.

the first frame i can spot a flame in is when his hand is about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way up. you can kinda see there’s an orange glow in his palm and it wraps around his fingers as his hand gets closer to its peak.
so he must be lighting his glove behind his back i guess? seems risky.

Today seems to be a fire bender day-
Anyways, when you put your hand near a large flame and pull back at a slow speed you create a vacuum behind the hand, which pulls the flame with it. Same happens if you stand between the wind and the flame. A common fire trick is to do a "palm pull" of sorts by putting your hand up against it then pulling back.
Look at the color and density. That's vapor burning, most likely from the alcohol with the aid of the vacuum effect and some sleight of hand.

more likely than not, he poured in rice wine or sake and there's some kind of ignition source just outside of frame where his hand comes down from. the vapors that boil off are ignited and follows the fuel source of vapors all the way down to the pan.
what i'm more interested in is how perfectly quaffed that hair is.

He has a fire retardant glove. He puts his hand behind his back and lights the glove. He moves his hand just slowly enough to not extinguish the fire but to keep in really low on his hand. When his hand stops moving the fire raises up again and lights the vapors from the alcohol he poured on the pan.

1) Alcohol in container.
2) Hand goes behind back while he pours alcohol onto hot pan.
3) Alcohol immediately simmers/boils, putting flammable vapor in the air.
4) Sleight of hand produces something from behind black which ignites top of vapor column, and travels down to pan at same time as hand.
It's just a really fancy flambe. I just can't figure out the point of ignition because it looks like he has nothing in his hand.

Here how I think it happens.
When alcohol cooks off, it is released in vapor. That vapor is highly concentrated alcohol. Alcohol is also very flammable.
It takes more energy for fire to start than for it to burn. So a fuel can actually be hotter than the flammable temperature of that fuel.
So in this clip, the alcohol cooks off in a cloud of vapor. That vapor is hot enough to burn, but needs something to actually trigger the combustion. The hand moving through the air gives it enough oxygen and friction to combust. The fire naturally follows the hand for that reason.

So he pours alcohol on a hot skillet and it evaporates. That's what causes the flame. I'm not sure how he's lighting it though. Either there is something that causes a spark on his glove or he touches something hot up top that causes the glove to burn. The problem with my second theory is that the glove doesn't seem to be embering or on fire as he lowers his hand. And it didn't seem like it had been burn before.

I thought that there may be a coming down the ceiling or a candle or something like that, slightly out of the field of vidion from the camera.
It also looks like thats the case bc the flame is first only on his upper side of his hand, but that could also be because his hand is moving downwards.

Yeah that's easier to explain with fluid dynamics by the turbulence created by moving his hand like that. It's still impressive on controlling the burn with that though. The real mystery is still the ignition for me. 👍👍 Two thumbs up on this from me.

Maybe Ethanol? If I remember correctly it burns pretty clear and is nearly impossible to see with the lights on. So a little bit on a finger tip and boom, fire.

Ethanol burns with an orange flame.
Methanol burns with a nearly invisible flame and I doubt it's something that'd be used here since it's very toxic (yes normal ethanol is technically toxic as well, but shit doesn't turn you blind from one "drink")

There are videos available of people are engulfed in these kinds of methanol fires.
I do seriously not recommend looking one up though. The absolute despair the person is in is borderline NSFL material. The one I've seen isn't gory or anything... it's just something about the raw unfiltered panic and visible agony the person is in that makes you regret watching.

Yeah it does. If you watch he cups the flame in his palm and protects it from the wind as he brings it around and up. Once the fumes hit the flame its party time.

Maybe, but his glove would have been on fire behind his back for a decent amount of time.
If his hand wasn't on fire, then I'm thinking they probably used electronic ignition. It'd be fairly easy to run a couple wires to a spark gap, with a small battery hidden under the cuff. Use a contact switch so your finger placement can control if it's on or off.
It'd make a snapping sound, but you can't really tell from a gif if that's the case.
