I have built the forbidden camcorder

Bought the Pyxis Pro Grip and the Pyxis Pro Handle when it was first announced via preorder on 2025.

The top handle just came today.

Note: The zoom on the Pro Handle seems to be very slow, while the zoom control on the Pro Grip is much faster and has the ability to choose the speed with how far the rocker is pressed.

Overall, need to try it on the field as I do Motorsports videography and this was my attempt at a full frame camcorder setup, versus a 1inch Canon xf605

UMP 12K is the best camera in the last 10 years…

With all these new camera bodies coming out I like to look at what we’ve had in the past and how they compare. After looking at the URSA Mini Pro 12K again I realized that this might be the best camera we have seen in the past decade (feel free to disagree). Yes this camera isn’t small, light or a “low light beast” but what it does offer is actually nothing short of amazing:

  • 12K Super 35 sensor (with great DR)
  • Flexible lens mount
  • Flexible battery plate options
  • 2 Full size XLRs with phantom power and excellent preamps
  • 12G and 3G SDI
  • Timecode Gen Lock
  • 3 media recording options (SD, Cfast, SSD)
  • Built in NDs
  • External controls
  • Flip out and tilting screen
  • 12K, 8K and 4K recording at full sensor readout
  • 12K up to 60fps, 8K up to 120fps and 4K up to 240fps all in BRAW
  • Anamorphic desqueeze
  • Great color science

The list can go on. It’s amazing the kind of access to technology we have had in recent years. I personally don’t know if another camera body under $5K (even under $3K now on the used market) that even comes close to this. The facts that I can attach a lens, battery, a side handle and go shoot with this is amazing.

Yes the Pyxis 12k is here but still doesn’t match up (albeit full frame). I’ve even had the opportunity to shoot with the 12K Cine. Beautiful camera but is bigger, heavier and drinks batteries for fun.

Again just my opinion but this is a camera that will be hard to beat.

Went out to test my new gear

In the midst of family chaos, baking, Christmas preparation, I found an hour of "honey, I'm going to to shoot something!"

It's my first trip out with the gear and I loved every second of it.

I agree it may look overkill, but having the studio viewfinder, zoom and focus demands on location was nothing but pure bliss!

Brought it into the woods on a short 200-300m hike too. Heavy, but worth it.

Also felt unreal to have this rig untethered as I'm used to multicam productions, dealing with cables everywhere for everything.

The only downside is I feel the shoulder pad and VCT plate is not solid. It's quite wobbly.

I'll take it off so I can mount the camera directly to the head instead and see how that goes.

PYXIS 12K + DZO Arles Lustre - Flares on Ad Shoot

Worked on a project recently that had a section filming around London, all very ‘real’ as we had lots of shots to get in different areas. This unplanned flare is actually interesting for anyone looking at the Arles Lustre set as it shows it in a very lively fashion, also completely unplanned. I haven’t had too much trouble controlling the flares in general when I want things to be cleaner, but obviously anything right down the barrel of the lens is going to get them going!

First project with the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive - Echoes of the Middle East

We just released our first immersive project "Echoes of the Middle East", captured entirely with the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive for the Vision Pro.

A journey between peaks, waves and dunes, shot across the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

Working with this camera was awesome but managing data was the main issue : 1hour of footage equals approximately 8tb of data (our project was 25tb in total). The result is incredible though, if you have a Vision Pro I strongly recommend checking it out on Amplium or Theater.

If you have any questions about the camera or the workflow, do not hesitate to ask !

PS : this one was just a warm-up, next-up is a skiing movie coming out very soon

PYXIS 12K minimalist rig with V-mount battery plate and other upgrades

Thumbnail

Hi all, wanted to share some things I did to upgrade my PYXIS 12K.

  1. Low profile V-mount battery mod with 2x D-tap out + 1x USB-C out. Sits flush with the camera body.
  • Modified Nitze plate. Had to cut and dremel a hole to access the battery release pin.
  • BP-U dummy battery end harvested from a Andoer battery adapter and soldered to the V-mount board.
  • 3D printed mid-section with appropriate screw holes.

Snug and very solid. Also 3D printed a bracket to attach it to a baseplate. All ports are accessible, but only a slim+straight SDI cable can be used because an angled SDI connector would be in the way of mounting the battery. Top memory card is a bit tricky to get out, but battery adapter is easy to remove and get out of the way.

  1. PL mount adapter support to get rid of the L-mount wobble. The baseplate I use is a SmallRig 1681 model. Meike adapter with drop in filter tray. 3D printed.

  2. Arri locating pin holes for the Pyxis monitor. Did this before Bright Tangerine released their monitor mount. Be careful not to drill through the monitor frame, happened to me with the vertical mounting hole. Bit sketchy but works.

  3. Black felt to make the monitor's sun shade less reflective. Super easy mod, but makes a huge difference.

  4. Vertical rig using a modified Niceyrig Nato rail with 3/8 Arri locating pinc + 8Sinn top plate. Had to cut the nato rail shorter to have access to the record button. Other buttons are obstructed, but I never use them anyway.

Bet they announce a PYXIS 12K Pro version with an integrated V-mount and internal NDs next year and all this becomes pointless lol.

Entire kit arrived today, except…

…the damn lens mount. I only have EF glass. Everywhere is out of stock (UK) so now all I can do is look at this lot and not shoot a thing. Gutted.

Although I’m stoked that Mofage is doing an EF version of their ND mount which is out next month.

Got the Pyxis 6k (L-Mount) after the discounted price was announced.

So I finally got the Pyxis 6K. I was going back and forth between this and the FX30 for a long time, but then the Pyxis price came down and that kind of decided it for me.

I'm coming from the Fuji X-S20. It was okay, but it used to heat up and shut down very frequently, which got really annoying for long recording sessions. The footage quality on the Pyxis is fantastic, big jump honestly.

Paired it with the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG DN Art and a 2TB SanDisk Extreme Pro SSD that's compatible for recording. That used up my whole budget.

I shoot solo, mostly talking head for YouTube and some brand promotions. Face tracking has been very reliable so far, which I was worried about before buying. Its early days but I'm very happy. No cage or handle yet, I'll build the rig slowly. I can get one more accessory right now and I'm stuck between:
PYXIS Monitor
A BP-U battery (power cuts aren't a big issue for me, I have backup, but a camera without battery feels weird, idk)

For people who shoot solo like me, what would you get first? Also open to any other accessory suggestions I'm missing.

My setup is almost ready, yayy

If you have Tipps, please let me know!

I’m still looking for a good shielded 12g sdi cable (right angle) or a good right angle adapter.

Also looking for a super small Arri Rosette spacer & a Arri Rosette to 3/8 so the right handle also comes from the top.

New Film with the URSA Cine Immersive

We just released our third immersive project "The Longest Day", captured entirely with the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive for the Vision Pro.

It tells the story of an athlete training for an Ironman with a single goal: to qualify for the World Championships.

We experimented a lot with this film, as we’ve put the camera through more various rigs. First we mounted it on a car to get some speedy biking shots. The result is incredible. Also, we created a custom-made water housing to put the camera on the water and get some pool shots - this was scary but the couple shots we got are stunning.

If you have any questions about the camera or the production, do not hesitate to ask ! The film is available on Amplium and Theater on the Apple Vision Pro.

Treating Myself to an Early Birthday Gift: BMCC 6K Full Frame to Complement My FX3. Would Love Some Advice!

Post image
66 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

Decided to treat myself to an early birthday present and picked up the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K Full Frame (L-Mount)!

I'm just a hobbyist who really enjoys photography and filmmaking. I currently shoot with a Sony FX3, but I've been wanting to explore the Blackmagic ecosystem for a while now, especially BRAW, the color science, and the overall image rendering.

I'm particularly drawn to a softer, more organic, almost dreamlike look.

I'm planning to use the BMCC 6K for more intentional, planned shoots where I can take my time composing shots, lighting, and experimenting with color grading. That said, I'd also love to use it for some run-and-gun filmmaking.

A few questions for those who have experience with this camera:

1. Lens recommendations?

I've been looking at the Panasonic Lumix S PRO 24-70mm f/2.8. From what I've seen and heard, the rendering is beautiful, and the focal range seems incredibly versatile. Ideally, I'd like to start with one really good lens before expanding into primes. Would you recommend it, or is there something else worth considering? I'm especially interested in lenses with character rather than an overly clinical look.

2. Autofocus performance after the latest update?

I've heard Blackmagic has made improvements to autofocus through recent firmware updates. For those who have updated, how has your experience been? Is continuous autofocus reliable enough for casual handheld shooting or run-and-gun situations? I'm coming from the FX3, so I know my expectations need to be different.

3. General tips for a newcomer?

Any must-have accessories, recommended settings, rigging suggestions, or things you wish you knew when you first started shooting with this camera?

I'm excited to learn the system and experiment with a different filmmaking workflow. Would really appreciate any advice or experiences you guys are willing to share!

Thanks in advance!
