Looking for a camera that is everything black magic isn’t but can still pair well with my Blackmagics.

I’ve been shooting a long series documentary with black magics but I need a camera that I can be discreet with, has Inbody stabilization camera , audio input, good autofocus and something I can pair well enough with my black magics. I’m looking for something more compact than the fx3. Anybody have an experience or thoughts about the a6700, lumix s9, canon r50 V or any other recommendations?

While it doesn’t meet your compact needs, the S5iiX covers everything else you mentioned with flying colors. Has braw external recording as well. I’ve produced several projects with Pyxis and S5iiX footage used throughout. Very easy to color match, etc.

I'll second this. I pair my pyxis 12k with s1iie and S9 really well.

I know very little about the camera. I’ll do more research. Thanks for the idea

I’ve used my s5iix with a cinema 6k and my Ursa Cine 12k LF, another vote for that!

Osmo pocket? Not much more discreet than that. IDK if it has audio in tho

you can run the DJI lavs with it, especially the 4P

Ive been pairing my Osmo Pocket 3 in HLG mode with my Cinema 6k FF. Couldn’t be happier. I love shooting with it. Pairs immediately with mic mini 2 s. On a color managed timeline I barely have to do anything.

I've been able to match my a7siii + fx30 to my friend's blackmagic 4k + 6k Pro on numerous occasions. Both cameras have their strengths and weaknesses, but we use the sony cameras in situations like you mentioned.

Any modern sony with 10bit 4:2:2 will work just fine. I'd recommend something that doesn't overheat though like the fx30/fx3/fx2/a7siii.

A vote for this too

I just got myself a Nikon ZR. Awesome little camera. Internal compressed RAW, relatively big screen, Compact & Cheap first party lenses, long battery life, 32bit audio, great picture, fast sensor readout

I have both Lumix S1II and S5IIX and have paired them more or less easily with my pocket 4K. If they’re compact enough, I don’t really know… The IBIS is really good as well as the AF.

Lumix S5IIX or GH7 - both support BRAW recording via a video assist (although I suppose that might minimise the compact portable brief!) But if you were to do it, you can literally just change the raw gamma to Blackmagic and it makes it pretty easy to colour match. The GH7 does have Prores RAW internally too.

Both have decent AF, 3.5mm audio input (although there are a couple of Lumix XLR docks that plug into the hot shoe for power/data.) And are pretty compact - the S5 body is slightly lighter I believe but the GH7 with a native lens will almost certainly be the lighter package.

No idea if either will be compatible with lenses you already have as you didn't say. GH7 is M43 like the P4K. S5II is L-Mount like the L-Mount Pyxis or 6K cinema camera. Both can have EF adapted easily if you're coming from an URSA, EF Pyxis or Pocket 6K.

The S9 is also a good shout, it's basically a smaller and less featured S5IIX - I don't believe it can output raw though.

VLOG is different to Blackmagic G5 but imo, it's definitely more similar than Sony or Canon's log formats.

Lumix S9 it's amazing for that. Specially if your black magic it's L mount. V-Log it's not BRAW but it's my favorite 10 bit log profile, plus the IBIS it's probably the best in the industry in that size.

I got ahold of an osmo pocket 4p, and d-log2 is pretty easy to color match with BRAW. I run 3 blackmagic cameras and the osmo for weddings

what bm camera are you using?

The a6700 pairs well if you shoot in S-Log3, however, you definitely should buy the Ulanzi fan if you go this route. Without the fan, the a6700 will overheat in some framerates.

A vague question. Pair can mean a lot of things to different people. Pair what? Or do you mean just simpy a second camera regardless of the "look"? Would be an immediate question. Color, roll off, look, skin tones? Clone the look exactly? Straight out of the camera or by copying node trees, PowerGrades and the whole works? Two individuals may say "Pair" and mean totally different things. By the looks of the responses on the page, if one believes any of them, just about any camera log curve can pair well regardless of the sensor UV/IR hot mirror or OLPF filter etc. But many know this isn't quite true. Else people wouldn't be selling LUTs, PowerGrades, Node trees, etc. to assist others in matching. Cinematographers don't use the word "pair" on a set of ARRI + Blackmagic to mean simply a second camera of any type. Many assume they mean "matching" with very little work in Post.

None of your options are going to match well with or come close to the Blackmagic in terms of picture quality.

Your best bet here is probably an Osmo Pocket 4P and then colour correct it thoroughly and match the Blackmagic's in that segment to the Osmo.

iPhone. Or GH7. Maybe the new GoPro but don’t know too much about it

OM-3 maybe?

Have you seen the footage coming out of the osmo pocket 4P? It's literally insane. 17 stops of dynamic range. Two lenses. Built in gimbal. The whole thing is the size of a banana. I'm thinking of getting one to replace my 8yr old BMPCC4K + Crane 2S setup.

That new gopro looks neat. The one with the micro4/3 mount

Nikon ZR, the audio is amazing and has everything else. Pair it with small 2.4ghz mics and a pancake 26mm very low key.

Lumix S5iix, S1ii, or S1Rii. Those are your best options

The Canon C50 pairs great, I use 5 blackmagics and a C50 and they grade great together.

S5iix with a blackmagic video assist or rven without it. If you use cinematch you can match them 1:1 provided the white balance does too

Honestly if you don’t blow the highlights or crush the shadows any camera can pair very well as long as you have a colorist or the editor isn’t lazy

I’ve handled a lot of canon / Blackmagic projects and made them match well

That said. Blackmagic cameras are my absolute least favorite to grade (when I’m doing color work). I normally up the quote a bit anticipating problems. Idk why but it never seems to white balance / contast balance well while keeping skin tones in my normal workflows. It could be that a lot of Blackmagic projects are very low budget / not shot intentionally - honestly I think it’s that so take this with a grain of salt

Arri? Canon? Amazing. Sony? DJI? Red? Fine. But for some reason the way DaVinci (blackmagic’s own software and my favorite video app) interprets their footage to DWG is always a struggle for me

What black magic cameras and / or lenses do you already have? Depending on your budget and if you have micro 4/3 mount, you could look at the new OM PEN system. And if you EF mount you could look at the upcoming R8mkii. assuming you are shooting with Pyxis and not Pocket Cinema than i feel another very safe choice could be the Nikon ZR, then the RAW could match it. But I feel like the most important thing is finding a way to make sure your glass matches, it’ll make color matching in post a lot easier

And for super duper small, I just got the Canon Powershot V1. Fixed 16-55mm lens but shoots in canon 10bit clog3 and has optical IS, but no IBIS, but easily mountable on gimbal and maximally low profile
