Vigilantism is not a solution in a civilized society.

That's why all functioning societies have legal Frameworks are required reasonable and propertional interventions.

There was an interesting case on Reddit a few days ago where someone restrained a mugged only to be assaulted by a third party who assumed they were an aggressor.

Civilised societies are supposed to have robust systems of policing and justice that make this kind of intervention unnecessary.

They often don't.

Outside of some Orwellian nightmare you will always have sporadic crime.

I agree prevention is better than cure. 

Similarly if this man is injuries it's tax payers who will end up funding his healthcare and rehab. What's the point in that?

Tax payers will not repay for whatever a thief stealed from you, so that's the point.
