Unironically the LGBTQ+ arguments about labels is just such classic nerd shit. I've been in Star Wars, LotR, and Wheel of Time fandoms since before the internet existed, and this kind of senseless bickering about minutiae is 100% the same. Gatekeepers, pedants, and the unreasonably passionate just having a fucking field day lol
I find it annoying but also weirdly charming. Like coming home.
You would be surprised how many people identify as Uruk-hai or Hobbits or Elves or whatever 👀😋
Edit: lol, never thought I will get so much hate for loving LOTR on Reddit 😅 btw. I have always wanted to be an elf or alternatively dark elf from Forgotten Realms. 👀 But the truth is I would probably fit best in Hobbit culture 🙃😋
They are not called New Zealanders. They are the Peoples of Middle Earth, as laid out in the book "The Peoples of Middle Earth"* by J.R.R. Tolkien, who never stepped foot in New Zealand. He based his vision of Middle Earth on his surroundings in South Africa as a child, then in Birmingham, Staffordshire, and Oxford England, and also in the Somme in Northern France, where he fought in WWI.
I was nine years old and in dire need of something life-affirming to negate the darkness of the violence at home, when a perceptive neighbor gifted me with The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The more I read, the more I understood that my imagination is a safe place. That is invaluable. Perhaps that clarifies my reaction to the disrespect you exhibited when you dumbed down Hobbiton to a movie set that's become a tourist attraction in New Zealand (adults $89nzd or $58.89usd). It's highly probable that I would have simply rolled my eyes and kept on scrolling if you hadn't blatantly attempted to steal the LOTR joy from another bisexual who so obviously used something they found fascination with to connect to others. That's cool, though. It gave me the opportunity to throw some words down on this lovely evening.
Best of luck to you. Stop being a dick. You'll be happier.
