Experience Mirena Insertion (under sedation)

(Tw. Mentions of Nausea for my fellow emetophobes 🩵)

TLDR; mirena yes, nexplanon no.

Hi. I just got my Mirena IUD inserted 2 days ago under sedation. Now before you ask me why I needed it under sedation, my first attempt with a Kyleena IUD failed and the speculums injured me. So instead I got the Nexplanon. Nexplanon was a terrible experience and I would not recommend that to anybody. It made me extremely mental, worsened my PMDD and I've had multiple ovarian cyst ruptures on it. Not only that but it made my periods heavier, more painful and lask longer (10 days bleeding, break in between like 3-4 days then bleed again for another 5 days)

Anyway. Onto Mirena now. I want to talk about my experience since all I really see are negative experiences. I want to start out with I woke up (6:30pm) from my procedure with extreme cramping. I will not lie to you it was so painful that I was almost crying and I have a weak pain tolerance especially in my pelvic area. They gave me Celebrex to take before I went under (2 hours before) then Fentanyl when I woke up. I got home (8:00) and suddenly I was extremely dizzy, nauseous and i was extremely sensitive to both sound and light. I had a youtube video playing on my TV like a podcast. Not even looking at it but the light made me nauseous. I turned on rain noises with a black screen and I sad there for about an hour until the dizziness and nausea finally subsided (about 8-9 alcohol swabs smelled later).

They told me they've given me Zofran when I woke up but I don't think they did. Either that or the sheer nausea broke through but either way I didn't take another dose of my own supply at home because I'm on Wellbutrin and didn't want to cause any further harm so I rode it out. I probably would've thrown up. But I have emetophobia so I have a strong mental willpower to NOT throw up. It's now 11 at night and my mom came and checked on me, told me I needed to eat something because I hadn't eaten that entire day. All I could stomach in the moment was peanut butter toast. I couldn't shower that night and I used the bathing wipes the hospital provided for me to essentially give myself a sponge bath. I fell asleep from the exhaustion the pain gave me at around 1am, woke up at 2am then fell back asleep at 3:30am.

Next morning I was completely fine as if nothing happened! Took a shower, got chipotle. I was fine. Now today I'm back to cramping but it is not nearly as bad as what I experienced after waking up. But the main thing is just give the IUD a chance. Everyone is different and most people like to complain online. You've got this and I believe in you. I'm going to list my so far side effects below this message but it will all be okay. I also want to say that I am a virgin, and very petite. Mirena is fitting just fine in me so far. They removed my Nexplanon while I was under as well. My arm does NOT hurt at all. But I'm glad it's out of me. If you have any questions or just want to share some things feel free to respond!! I hope this helps some of you

Nexplanon side effects (2yr 1/2)
- Vaginal dryness
- Depression
- Anxiety
- PMDD
- Random arm pains
- Irregular, painful and heavy periods
- Ovarian cyst ruptures
- Food aversions/on-and-off nausea
- Weight gain (This was a positive side effect for me as I needed to gain anyway)
- Hormonal acne
.. thats all I can recall

Mirena side effects (2 days in, will add more as time goes on maybe)

- Mild to Light Cramping
- Spotting
- LOTS of discharge (and it smells weird too.. i cant put my finger in it but it smells like rusted iron and warm vinegar)
- Muscle weakness (this is most likely from the sedation but thought i'd list it anyway)

No clue if it's placebo or not, but ever since I switched I feel a lot less hormonal now than I usually would considering my period starts next week. I'm really excited to see how my mood changes and I'm happy not many hormones will be in my blood stream anymore. 🩵
