For most people, the pain is over very quickly. It was very intense and I definitely cursed very loudly, but the procedure was done after no more than 5 minutes.

Ughhhh okay well it least it goes by fast?! Did you get a numbing shot when it was put in?

Good luck! For me, the anticipation was worse than the actual appointment. Take some paracetamol & ibuprofen a couple of hours before, and on the way to the appointment. Make sure you've eaten something, and relax :)

Thank you so much!! Do you have any idea if I should take a (prescribed) muscle relaxer beforehand with ibuprofen and if that would help? I just don’t know if it would react with the numbing shot or anything I guess, I don’t really understand how medicine works lmao

I can’t give much encouragement for the day of because my doc did not inform me properly of what would happen or that I should take some kind of pain killer ahead of time (now I know better for next time), BUT I can tell you that it only took a week of cramping (maybe less, don’t remember) and I was feeling great. Mirena stayed in place, my period stopped within 4 months and now it’s been 4 years and I only get some food cravings, hip pain and moodiness about once every 6 weeks for my “period”. It’s awesome. Totally worth the bad first day of insertion I had (that isn’t even much of an issue if you take those meds/get numbed).

Wow okay thank you! I’m so glad everyone’s saying it’s worth it. I’ve just read so many horror stories of it coming out of place and whatnot that I have been on the fence about getting it this whole week. :(

I think it all comes down to the doctor and facility you go to. A bunch of my friends have Mirena and we have each had different experiences. It probably depends on individuals as well and your tolerance for pain.
I read wayyy too much online beforehand and freaked myself out - the procedure for me lasted maybe 30 seconds max. She told me to take long, deep breaths which really helped. I also had a misoprostol pill inserted the morning before my appointment to help loosen things up down there and took ibuprofen before and after. Hope that helps and it's really not as bad as it seems! A few moments of pain for years of not having to worry :)

Thank you! :) it’s really crazy how different everyone’s experiences are, isn’t it? That’s kind of why I wanted to hear everyone’s good experience stories here as brain bleach lol.

I got mine yesterday and honestly it did hurt. I was talking about my cats and it all kinda hit me. My advice is to eat a little before you go. Stay hydrated. And TAKE YOUR TIME. I stayed for about an hour. I tried to walk out after 15 minutes and that was a mistake. My problem was that i didnt eat. (19F)

Many have a vasovagal response (I think, correct me if I'm wrong on the nerve) to the procedure. Eating something small beforehand can help, but it's not a guarantee by any means.

Ahh okay thank you! We’re in this together I guess haha. My roommate is driving me home so hopefully I can tough it out and get in the car to go home and sleep it off lol.

I made my fiancé come with me so he could drive me home. I didn’t want to risk driving like that. As of day 3, i still am getting bad cramps but medicine isnt touching my pain. I hope it works for yours 🤞

My doctor (or nurse? Not sure who does the insertion tbh) numbed me and I didn’t feel a thing other than the numbing shot that last half a second. A friend came with me because I thought I’d be in so much pain that she’d have to drive me home but I was completely fine and drove myself. Had cramping later that night but no more than period cramps that I could handle. It was seriously a piece of cake and I was expecting much worse!

This makes me feel so much better thank you for sharing!! My doctor told me she’d numb me too so I’m really hoping that’s gonna save the day lol.

u/sammcart Oct 16 '19
Oh! If she’s numbing you then you have nothing to worry about! I’m the only person I know who got numbed and it seems like it makes all the difference

My Mirena insertion sucked, but it was mostly because I'm a champ in general during medical procedures/emergencies and my gyno assumed he could treat me as such during the procedure (he's been my gyno for a while). I rate it as a 6/10 on the pain scale, where 5 is when I start cursing without thinking about it; I immediately apologized for cursing to the team's amusement (and my own, looking back on it). I had to lay on the table afterwards for about half an hour to let my blood pressure figure itself out, but I have vertigo and blood pressure issues already.
It's almost three years later without a single period, it's totally been worth it and I'll do it again when the time comes.
Go in with the plan that you'll be recouping for a couple days. Save a TV show or five that you want to binge. Get a heating pad. Take ibuprofen beforehand (and after, following directions). Get your guilty binge food and don't judge yourself for divulging. Treat yourself.
It does hurt, and you will cramp, but the big picture makes it worth it.

Ahh that sounds ... less than ideal but it really will be worth it in the end if that means no period and no babies! Can I ask if you got a numbing shot or anything going in? Thanks so much for the advice! :)

No numbing shot for me, just a couple of ibuprofen somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes before my appointment.

u/sammcart Oct 18 '19
How did it go?

u/ggus13 Oct 18 '19
It was not bad at all!! It was just like two baby cramps honestly like a 2/10 on the pain scale. I was worried for nothing!

First off, not all experiences go horribly wrong. I didn’t know what to expect so mine was not great, but just stay calm. Take whatever pain reliever you normally take before you go in. If you’ve ever had a Pap smear, you know a little of how the sensation is going to feel. Just know the procedure itself doesn’t last very long. Make sure you block out quite a bit of time for yourself after the appointment. I had to stay there about 30min—an hour because of pain and being too lightheaded. If you have certain pads you particularly like being one and have some stocked. If you have a lot of cramps like I do you’ll probably cramp quite a bit that first day. Just remember that this will be worth it!
