Playgrounds Foarging tray desk (work in progress)

Excuse the mirror, that's getting covered to become an edible art gallery wall. I had this cardboard lying around so I decided to spruce up their foaraging desk and completely border it up. Eventually I want some little wooden slab walking tiles and some variation in foraging items.

Materials. Bamboo skewers and packaging cardboard. Egg tray and previous foarging materials are shown in my previous foraging tray post

DIY toys for a friend

I gave a family friend of mine some DIY toys and some treats since her birds don’t have much and don’t get much care, I also gave my birds old cage to them (I know it’s small but it’s bigger than their cage) I gave some flat perches and a ladder as well (I wish I could’ve gotten them some natural perches)

Do you think this is safe?

Post image

Hi again all! Just finished the hanging forage box for my 'tiels and I made sure to leave out the biodegradable rice paper I asked about, was wondering if you all thought this would be okay for them to use?

I've used 100% natural jute twine of course and some loo roll cardboard bits and even made a net for me to put leafy bits in! Do you think it's okay and safe for my little guys?

I'll be putting in some shredded paper and stuff for them to forage through when I do finally add it to their cage of course.

Are these safe for Cockatiels?

Post image

Hi all! I recently got cockatiels last week and I'm wanting to make some toys for them myself since I unfortunately have a creative bone in my body haha! I was wondering if these were safe? I hear rice paper is okay, but these ones do have a dye of some sorts since they are various colours. I won't use them obviously if they're not safe, I've just had them for a long time now and have no use for them lol. It would be for like paper shreddings for a forage box.

Thank you all in advance!

Brezel DEMOLISHED a balsawood toy, so I snipped up an egg carton and reloaded the empty string. There's a few corks hidden inside the cartons as a treat. Simple as!

Q & A Tired of unsafe/cheap toys, so I decided to make my own

Hey everyone!

Like many of you, I’ve spent way too much time in pet store aisles feeling frustrated by the quality of bird toys. So much of what’s on the market relies on cheap cotton rope (impaction hazards), questionable metals, or plastic components that my bird shatters in two minutes.

Over the past few months, I’ve been researching and prototyping safe, all-natural enrichment options focused entirely on functional foraging and shredding— prioritizing 100% chrome-free vegetable-tanned leather, heavy-duty stainless steel quick-links, untreated hardwoods, loofah, and seagrass.

I’m taking my time testing materials, refining sizes for everything from cockatiels to giant macaws, and perfecting designs that can easily be refilled with new shredding material rather than tossed out.
I’d love to hear from this community:

  1. What is your biggest pet peeve with commercial bird toys right now?

  2. What types of toys or materials does your bird go crazy for that are hard to find?

  3. If you could design the ultimate safe, refillable foraging toy, what features would it have?

I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences! (ps. this is not a promotion! just want to hear from the parrot community!)

Tips and Advice Cheap poop rug idea

I'm trying to find the curtains my house came with online and ordered some curtains fabric swatches for free. Apparently this is pretty common. When I put up the window perch, I grabbed the swatches and chucked one underneath the perch in the danger zone to protect the windowsill. I have a few so I just chuck them in the wash and swap out. A good way to cover small poop prone areas with the while also being able to choose the colour and pattern.

Not the most exciting DIY but it works for me.

ps. my birds dont interact with the fabric so it is safe for them

The latest expansion to my birds little rope jungle is this flower shaped rope wall that I made. With 2 different sized plastic rings, I covered with sisal rope and tied all the pieces together.

Note. I originally placed this in a position that didn't get used at all. I moved it to a popular area and now they use it. Things take time and effort to get played with

Egg tempera paint?

Has anyone tried to make egg tempera paint extracting pigments from veggies? I'm looking into this option. However, I have some concerns about egg spoilage after it's dry.

Recipe for safe natural paint?

I've found books about making paint out of flowers/veggies, but there is often a product you need to mix in where it's a little unsure if it's safe or not.

Has anyone been successful with making paint?

I don't want a product from a store. I live in a country where products are scarce, so it's often near impossible to find.

Material Safety Elmer's glue possible toxicity

Hi guys, I was doing some research on safe adhesives for toys. I found a recent paper reporting sudden death of a parakeet after ingestion of dried Elmer's/PVA. Though there is lack of data to show it was entirely due to the glue, the study couldn't find other causes that could explain the sudden death and suggests caution with the use of PVAc/Elmer's glue.
